Cochin Thread!!!

It's way to hot to ship down to TN right now, unfortunately. I've been looking for some eggs forever. Eggs have a little bit better luck. I know that I could get hatchery stock, (which I didn't want to do) but I don't want to chance having chicks sent in this heat either.

Our heat index lately has been 100 and over.

Here's a couple of pics of the GL Bantams I've been able to hatch out so far. The first pair(?) is 35 days old; the 2nd pair(?) is 31 days old. I just wasn't expecting to see this coloring in the males(?). The pics of the dam and sire are on My Page, as well as pics of the first pair when they were a day old. I was able to hatch out 8 total before Marigold decided to go broody.

I would definitely say you have two pairs there. Your chicks are kind of young yet but give them a little time and you'll start to see the differences in the males and females. They're absolutely adorable! I have 3 adult Gold laced standard hens that I need to get a roo for. And I'm hoping that I get at least a nice trio from the eggs that I have in the incubator now.

Thanx Laurie! They definitely are some of the cutest chicks I've had in a long time - love the early markings! I had meant to ask if your eggs were Bantam or Standard, so I'm glad you answered that for me. I'd still be very interested to see what your chicks look like - I would think the coloring on the Standard chicks should be close to the same as the Bantams. Keep us posted, and good luck with the hatch!

Hi, I love seeing everyone's wonderful cochins, I had no idea there was so much beautiful variety! I love mine because of their wonderful mellow personalities. I had a buff cochin hen, but a hawk got her this winter. She was my favorite of all my birds! Luckily I still have one of her babies.

I have crossed my buff orpington girls, with our beautiful big blue cochin rooster,

and I got these wonderful little calico looking chicks! The girls have black heads, and the baby roo doesn't They are only 6 weeks old, I am curious to see what they look like as they get bigger. I love the blue/buff mix.

Has anyone else got any like this?

We had a Partridge Cochin, alas who died a few months ago from egg binding. But she was a beauty (if a little weird).

Here's Trespassers as a chick:

And as a pullet::

Can't find any good hen pictures of her at the moment!

Please post more pictures as they mature!

I think it depends if the bird carries recessive white or not. But then I am still wading through all the genetics of the whites. You would think it would be easy with that color but not for me.
My white roos get this way from sun because I don't feed much corn and they don't eat what is in the mix. The babes are so wonderfully white and my hens tend to stay very white but that prancing roo turns yellow every summer as he walks the enclosure to make sure all is well with his harem.
I have read that it could be genetic if it only shows up on the hackles and saddle feathers but can't explain that. Someone with more genetic knowledge will have to field that one.
