Cochin Thread!!!

Here are a couple of pictures of our Partridge Bantam Cochins that our kids are raising for 4-H and will go to the fair this year to be shown by my DD(she's 10 years old). They are about 4 months old now.

Out of the birds we have these are the most calm and love to be held and will fall asleep in your arms.

I just got these two a few days ago and simply had to share them. I am not sure what color you would call them but I simply love them. I think I am going to name the hen Coral but I am still not sure of a name for the Rooster yet. I would love some suggestions. If anyone has any thoughts on what colors they are, I would love to hear that too.

Pardon the condition of the rooster, he came to me a little beat up.

Yellow can be from the sun or feeding corn. If that's the case, they'll probably moult it out. It can also be genetic. From what I understand, it depends on if the bird carries Silver or Gold. A white bird that carries the silver gene will be grayish blue when hatched. A white bird that carries gold will be more yellow at hatch. Now, I'm far from being an expert at color genetics, but this is what I learned when I went through the same thing here. Notice when you get offspring from these white birds, what color are the chicks at hatch?

La Unica,
they are so lovely! Congrats on such a find.

The hen looks to be a lemon blue but she is more gold than I usually see on the neck and chest. The roo may be too but has something else in the background, maybe light Columbian mixed with blue? I can't be for sure since I have seen chicks hatch from the same pens that grow up in a lot of different ways so it just depends what is expressing from what it is genetically.

I can't wait to see what chicks you get from this pair.

Are you going to breed them together or mate them with something different?

I think you are as bad as I am loving these bantam Cochins and having so many!

That hen is beautiful! Would you like to ship her to me???

Sorry, don't think I could part with her for any money. I absolutely adore her. She is such a sweet little thing on top of being beautiful. I will have some eggs off of her soon though!!

Thank You Nadine!!

The Roo also has a red tint to him but not to the degree that the hen has. I just picked up another rooster today that looks very similar to the one pictured above but he has a lot more red on a darker blue body. I think I am going to breed Coral ( the hen pictured ) with the rooster she came with for a month or so and then switch it up and put her with the rooster I just got today. I will post pictures of the new rooster tomorrow if I can find the time.
I also picked up a Frizzled Columbian and two smooth hens ( one has very little in the way of markings ), one Frizzled Buff Columbian Cochin, and one Wheaten hen.
I am so excited. I think these birds will be a big boost to my breeding program. This year we hatched all of our eggs ourselves but I think next year we are going to foccus more on selling eggs online. We simply can't sell the chicks locally fast enough.

I can't wait to see what these new birds produce for me. I am absolutely addicted to these birds. As far as the color, I had thought Lemon Blue as well but because of all the red tones in the birds, I thought Coral Blues was more appropriate. Of course, I just made it up so its not like a real name anyway. Just seems to suite them nicely. I actually named the hen Coral so go figure.
