Cochin Thread!!!

i was amazed at all the fluffy tushies there, both large and small!

this is the first time i've ever gone to one of the poultry shows and i'm hoping next year i might be able to bring a bird or two!

i was disappointed that no one had any barred cochins in either size being shown or for sale. i have a very nice looking boy but i was hoping to get an idea of what to look for in him by comparing what they had there. i was also hoping to get a girl or two for him.

does anyone know about barred birds and what it could mean if there is an occasional black feather? does this mean he could have been a cross of barred and solid black parents?

I have three cochins now. One is Partridge, and the other two are mixed between partridge and buff.

They all seem to be in a partial molt. Almost a full molt for the full partridge girl. She's starting to fill out a lot nicer :) All have such prominent foot feathering! Note how this girl is losing her black tail feathers. I am not sure if they will come back or not. Her butt seems to be rounding.

I love the colouring of the last one. I've named her Honey. She is very friendly. The other two are not though. I thought cochins were really easy going? My partridge and other partridge x buff are very scared of people - despite constant handling and always being around them from a young age.

Sorry I do not know anything about barred cochins. But, there were both some in the bantam's being shown and some for sale in the sale area on Sunday.

Hi, Not sure what you mean totally. I can say that no I do not let my show birds roost. They are on the floor with deep clean bedding.

Sorry I meant mess up their breast or feathers? My cockerels and cocks do not roost, but my pullets do, I need to know if I need to remove their roosts? Thanks

Hi, I'm not sure to be honest. I've never had any roosts with my Bantam Cochins or Silkies. I prefer to have them on the ground and snuggling at night in a pile!!! lol Maybe someone else will chime in and advise you whether or not they allow them to roost.

Hi guys! I have four Cochins. I am in love with them. I think they are the prettiest birds. I can't wait to see what kind of babies I end up getting.
I also have (by accident) a Cochin Silkie cross, who is gorgeous, and two Cochin Wyandotte crosses, who are HUGE. I would really like to work with this breed, and I have enjoyed looking through photos on this thread! You all have some gorgeous birds.
