Cochin Thread!!!

I'm gonna go for a pullet, but I think she's a cross. It's hard tell tell - especially when a bird is being held. The first thing that caught my eye is how big her head is if she were purebred - Cochins have small heads and short necks. She's cute, nonetheless!

YOu should probably post her on this thread

I agree, definitely a light brahma. Not sure on hen vs roo.....I just rehomed a bunch at that age, both boys and girls....without seeing the tail feathers, its hard to tell. although considering how red the face is at that age...I'm leanin towards rooooooo.

I would like to know if anyone in VA has any "nice" breeder quality or show quality, or at the very least from show lines WHITE BANTAM Cochins? I started out wanting some dark Brahmas, but OMG, they are impossible to find and no one wants to give any up until Fall, and they will be adult birds. This is quite understandable, but I can't help but be frustrated. I don't want to wait until Fall. So, I started looking around for dark Brahmas in VA, thinking maybe if I find some they'll let me just come pick them up. Well, there aren't any. UGH! However.. in my search I came across some white Cochins and I actually think I prefer them to the Brahmas. (Fickle, I know, but the first step is admitting it). I have given up on the Brahmas, and now I'm searching for some Cochins, in VA, so that I can go pick them up and not have to wait for the temps to cool down to get my new chickens! They seem more readily available than the Brahmas, and so I thought that would dampen my frustration a bit. It didn't however when I realized that anyone with SQ birds will not give any up until Fall because they want to grow them out and see what they have first. Again, quite understandable, but I want young birds (really nothing over 5 weeks old). I really do hope to show one day, so I'm hesitant to purchase from a hatchery. And if I purchase from a hatchery, I'm looking at Fall anyway right? Because of the temps? I really never thought chickens would be so hard to find. I managed to collect a flock of 10 Silkies within a month! Anyway, unless someone has a solution (I hope) this really is just a "vent". And I feel better already. :)

If you really want show quality birds you will have to give up the "I want it now!!!!" mind-set. Spring or fall is when breeders get rid of birds, no matter the breed. Be patient, good things will happen. If your not careful, you may settle for anything because you demand instant gratification. Hatchery birds are okay if you are not going to show. Just my two cents worth, take it or leave it.

GracieNut,
I agree with Tim63, and while I wouldn't try to talk you out of Dark Brahmas because we could use more Dark Brahma Btm breeders, I am located in VA, and I do have White Cochin Bantams. However, nothing available until fall. If the Brahmas were your first choice, I'd wait on them. Regardless of which breed you choose if you think you'd like to get into showing, then the wait will be worth it.

Nothing quite like walking into a barn full of birds that reach your knees!

One day I shall have a complete collection of Cochins, Brahmas and Langshans. I think I'll only do blue mottled largefowl Cochins though..

I'm waiting, I'm waiting. LOL, I don't have any other choice, and I want the best, so I have to wait. :) I'm pretty set on the white Cochins at this point.

Don't the large birds scare you people? LOL!! My mom and step dad had a working farm that I spent summers on growing up, and they had a ton of free range chickens that I just got the biggest kick out of. But, there was one rooster that liked to chase, and ever since then, as much as I love chickens and the 'looks' of roosters, I have a tendency to be timid around them. I'm exactly 5 feet tall so, no, I personally would not want birds so big that they come up to someone's knees. Because on me that would probably be my waist! LOL

Why the preference for the standard over the bantam? Is there a personality difference? Or is it just the massive looking bird that people like? I've noticed a lot of people seem to prefer the standard cochin over the bantam.
