Cochin Thread!!!

My Ameraucanas were laying 2-3 eggs a day before I got them. They stopped laying from the middle of October until the end of January. The temps, their age and the move are all possible reasons they aren't laying for you.

i have a trio of MF. when i got them there was an egg in the cage they had laid.since i have gotten them home they have not laid 1 egg! they have a limo set up and i have given them everything they could possible need. good feed, oyster hell, egg shells, granite, sand you name it. they have a gret nest box with plenty of bedding etc. i put a blue hen in with them that has been laying every day to try to stimulate them to lay. the trio is young but like i said before they had laid an egg before. they have been in their new home about a month now. the guy i got them from is very respected in the chicken community around here so i dont suspect any trickery from him like putting an egg in the cage when i went to look at them. what can i do to help get them going?

ok i'm curious. can you tell the black splits from non-splits? the 3 blacks i have are supposely split but only time will tell at this point. unless there's a way to tell.

and i'd move someone. either the broody or the non-broodies... maybe 2 broodies could share a pen. i've heard of broodies being co-mommas.

By breeding them - I think the rate sould be 50% Self-blues chicks?

another thing to consider is lighting. it could be he was keeping them under lights so if they went from longer to shorter day length, they may take a bit to adjust to the normal day lengths again... my quail went from laying daily when inside to nothing outside and haven't laid an egg since early march now...

*note to self: add lights to the quail pen*

if you're referring to my question about telling self blue splits from non-splits, i know that 2 splits will produce 50% self blue and 50% black split to self blue. my question was, can you tell visibly a black (that doesn't carry self blue) from a black split for self blue? the 2 i have are supposedly split, but haven't started laying yet so i have no idea...

I just got 7chicks yesterday and 3 of them are cochin mixes. Also got a frizzle that is part cochin!

Box of chicks!

Our frizzle chick!

One of the cochin mixes. This one is yellow with gray/blue markings. Could that end up being a splash coloring?

This is the one that we think may be part polish. The head area looks slightly bigger.

There all sooooooo CUTE!!!!!! Did you name them?

I agree but you can't tell the splits from the nons until you breed them.........bummer. Have you checked to see if the "splits" will work in breeding Self-Blue? With some colors it doesn't matter and it all depends on genotype, they can't carry the gene you want. I don't know since I've never bred them and so haven't paid much attention to this issue.

Sorry, I didn't read far enough before jumping in ~ you already know about the gene.

Nope. Only 2 of our current 10 chicks have names. Our little polish is named Captain Chick (b/c of my avatar), the Turken is Shaved Neck! Yes they were named by by 5 year old! We don't really name our chickens. The only one of our grown ones that even has a name is our BR rooster. My ODS called him Blackbeard when he was younger. That lst one that I thought was a cochin/polish mix has became my mystery chick. It has a mohawk and a different comb. I'm beginning to suspect some Brabanter influence but I have to get with the seller and see if he has that breed in his flock.

Of our cochins we have a blue one, the possible splash and the frizzle. The blue and splash are 4 weeks old and the frizzle is probably 5 weeks old now. I think they are all girls too. Since I have no experience with single comb birds that were bought SR though I am not sure. I'm not seeing alot of comb development going on though so I am assuming they are girls. Hopefully I'm right!

ETA: How soon can you determine gender in cochins? What should I be looking for? I do not have experience with figuring out gender of single comb chicks. Our last batch of chicks were EEs, 2 RIRs, and a BR and the RIRs and BR were bought sexed.

. Does anyone know of any baby Cochins for sale in Souther Wisconsin area?
you might join the wisconsin thread and see about any swaps/sales that are coming up, and for shows in your area. a good way to meet other local breeders.
