Cochin Thread!!!

I have to say those 2 blue partridge girls that were posted back a week or so ago, look much better in person.

my mille roo (who will get them) is in love already even tho he can't get close to them yet. LOL he's long distance flirting right now. even hubby thought they were interesting. and that's something from someone who's favorites are the oegb LOL
you'll have to post some pics of blue milles when you get them. I think I have a couple but they have a while to grow

it'll be a while. first we have to go thru quarantine, then incubate the eggs. i don't think i'll worry about fertility. he's trying to breed the side of the cage closest to them. LOL

Craig, my Partridge laid just OK, my best layers were the Buff Columbians, then the Columbians. My good Blues didn't do so well until just recently and my older Birchens always lay really well. I'm now looking for my new Birchens to get old enough to start to lay. I've got them pair up pretty well I think. I put the sport Columbian hen with a solid black Birchen roo, so I'll be very interested to see what that produces.
That or a trip into indiana this fall. Kind of depends on whether I have something show worthy. Wait that has never stopped me before! Did the partridge lay well this spring? I have only gotten 1 egg from them and1 from my Buff Columbian. The only birds laying regularly are my Silver Penciled hen and a Black pullet. I am looking for a Silver Laced Bantam rooster for a SL improvement project. I want the best I can find but will use a hatchery bird if necessary.

day late and a dollar short. LOL i just sold my pair of silver laced. they both had very nice lacing and type, but i was short pens to put them in. i've got a few eggs from them (the ones i sold) cooking too, but not sure if they're color or even breed crossed since everyone free ranged for a while.

most of my cochins came from luckypickens. way better than hatchery IMO... i got them in an assortment back in november, but i'm sure she'd make up a special order for specific colors. i've got 26 black/self blue, bbs, and mille in the 'bator cooking away. fertility is great. waiting to see now what hatches. last hatch was about 40% from her. from that group i got 4 cockerels and 1 pullet silver laced, a trio of black/sb, and 1 mille roo... the 3 least pleasing laced roos went to a swap asap.

I went to the feed store yesterday and some one was selling their breeding pair of White Cochins for $50.00. I know nothing of the breed and am not looking to get any more chickens. I was just wondering is that an outrageous price for them. The poor things were SO easily spooked.

For a QUALITY pair from a REPUTABLE breeder, $50/pair is somewhat on the low end. They usually start at $75-$80, and go up from there.

Good Cochins should not spook easily. Any pair can be a "breeding" pair - just what did they mean by that - only that they were of breeding age? I don't know of any reputable breeders that hang out at feed stores with birds to sell. For $50, did they elaborate any further on the type/quality/health/background of the birds, or just that they were "breeders". And you don't really want to be breeding any birds unless they are of a quality to ensure you of quality offspring.

I have purchased excellent pairs for $50, and I've also paid $200 for just one excellent hen.

I understand that feed costs need to recouped when you sell a bird, but for this particular pair (as described), I think $50 is very high.

Not high at all if they are any good. Are they bantams or large fowl. I have a friend that bid a pair of Blacks up to 100 for the pair before she got them.
Gail you said it better than I. I don't think I have gotten a pair for $50 ever.

Yes, I paid $100 for an absolutely gorgeous pair of Blacks from an excellent breeder that took a lot of time to give me the details of their breeding and also informed me that the roo is a full brother to the Black that went BB (not sure if it was first or second show), but I feel like I got a real deal. Could have easily paid $150 or better under other circumstances.
OH and by the way, I've already got 2 eggs from the hen, and that's even after sitting at the show all that weekend and then making the trip across country to Ohio.
Thank you again Craig for pointing me in that direction.

They are as good as you will find for sale. He had Reserve Cochin the first show. Bernita had Champion Cochin. If you hadn't been bidding I would have bid on those. Clean them up and they will do well in a show. Are you doing AI like I showed you?

wish someone around here could show me... guess i just need to break down and try. LOL i want to learn the AI not just for the cochins, but for a project to figure out exactly what goes into making a colored dorking. i figure since it's a purely genetics project, i'll use bbr oegb and shrink the colors down to something that doesn't eat quite as much, or take up as much room. LOL but dorking x oegb just doesn't work well on it's own. in either direction.

not sure why i'm so hesitant... unless i'm afraid of offending the roos maybe? LOL
