Cochin Thread!!!

OK update on our Bantom Cochin chicks, we had our buff "looking like a pullet" get her head caught in the wire where the corner of the growout pen was and we did not see it in time and lost her unfortunately. The other 4 are doing phenominal! Our buff still seems to be staying buff but the three blacks are getting some copper and silver showing up! from initial pics and feather sexing and how they were feathering in it looked like Capone was our only cockerell but now I am not so sure!?!? Well here are some quick pics from this morning and maybe you can tell me if I am seeing things or did it turn out all but one are cockerells!?!? I am also interested in their coloring and what you think these will look like when they are adults, we only plan to keep a pair to breed and the rest for the laying pen unless they turn out to be three cockerells and one pullet Capone, this is the one that thru wing feather sexing at 2 days old looked cockerell, is feathering in slower "still has baby fuzz' and has the bald elbows and is the smallest of the chicks. he also had a nice red comb a week ago where the rest were still yellow. "Staying no mater what! he was hatched with the bald spot and it never feathered in, most likely will be a grandkids pet" THIS IS PROBABLY A MALE The one on the left still looks like a pullet to us and is one we want to keep for sure, she has some nice rich copper coming in and has the sweetest personality! This one would be one for the pair to raise more. "As sweet as she is I would hate to put her in the laying pen! :D The one on the right was looking to be a pullet until all of a sudden its crest started getting bigger and over the last week started to get red now we are confused! If it is a male we will keep it to go with the copper girl as it has silver coming in with the same patterning as the copper in about the same quantity as well. THE BLACK ONE ON THE RIGHT IS A MALE Finaly the remaining buff, we also thought pullet on this one but as with the silver started developing a comb that is reddening up as well. THIS IS ALSO PROBABLY A MALE Thank you for any input on these guys:cool:

Hi everyone!

Every winter my cochin roosters suffer frostbite on their combs. One of them has a perfectly striaght comb because all of the teeth have fallen off from frostbite. I can't figure out how to prevent it, some say vaseline, but that never really works. So this year, I'm trying to make 'comb protectors'. Here's a quick prototype. The material needs to be a bit tighter and more strechy. The rooster in the pictures is Tom Jr. and he doesn't mind wearing it, but when he pecks at the dirt, it often falls off which is why the material should fit around his comb better. What do you think? Do any of you have other ways to prevent frostbite? Heating the barn isn't an option...

It sounds like a good idea. I don't know if all my roosters would like wearing it. Keep us informed on how it is working. I'll think on it too. Occasionally the weather gets bad enough here to cause frostbite and vaseline or udder balm has helped but we don't get as cold as MN. Beautiful roo BTW

OMG!!! I've seen chicken sweaters but this makes a lot more sense. I should be knitting chicken hats or should they be called Comb Covers or Poultry Protectors? Alpaca fleece is much warmer, very comfortable next to the skin and available in 22 natural shades

but a blend with 20% wool gives the yarn more memory. I've got it... Knitted Noggins! ha ha! Get you knitting needles out...

Love the names! I called them comb covers in my other post, but I never thought of poultry protector. And Knitted Noggins!

Also thanks for the tip on Alpaca fleece!

So, I have this hen for a pet. I'm guessing she's a splash? Is this anywhere near being close to a proper cochin bantam splash? I can't seem to find any that look like this girl when I search Google for splash.

Would a hen that looks like this be worth doing anything with other than keeping for a nice pet? Her foot feathers are in terrible condition. I swear, there are more than this picture shows!

She's mottled. I'll let the pros got at the rest of the questions. She does have to much white for showing, I can say that.

This is a too heavily marked Black Mottled hen, she may have some age on her and this might be contributing to her extreme white markings. She has reasonably good type and you could check with Mandy to see if she would be worth breeding. My guess would be a solid Black or Blue roo or at the very least an extremely under marked roo, but it would be best to check with Mandy (cochincoop).

ok got a bunch of pics today. loving my new camera but i still need to learn it better, since there's still some fuzz on most of the pics.
figured i'd post here too, since not everyone follows the mille fleur cochin thread. 8)

my free range group of chicklets... 3 cockerels 7 pullets from my mille fleur pen, with a dorking pullet (colored project).

think this boy is staying... and his twin too (above left)
depends how they mature, but i like what i've seen so far.

and from my younger pen... (4 dorkings, 16 cochins - 10 from shipped eggs)
i only poosted a few of my own breeding
the skunklet - got a LOT more white than i was expecting.

another view of skunklet, with a partridge behind and another less-white mille fleur chick to the left.

these 2 girls are the only 2 i kept from last summer's breedings. the girl top/behind is a blue mille.

another view of the bottom girl.
