Cochin Thread!!!

She's mottled. I'll let the pros got at the rest of the questions. She does have to much white for showing, I can say that.
Well that just show how little I know about these Cochin colors.

She was sold to me as a splash and obviously I didn't know any better. lol Maybe the girl that had her didn't know any better either. She had mostly blues, all pet quality birds.

This is a too heavily marked Black Mottled hen, she may have some age on her and this might be contributing to her extreme white markings. She has reasonably good type and you could check with Mandy to see if she would be worth breeding. My guess would be a solid Black or Blue roo or at the very least an extremely under marked roo, but it would be best to check with Mandy (cochincoop).
When I bought this hen I was told she was about a year and a half. But then again, I'll never know for sure if that's really true or not because the girl I bought the hen from also told me she was a splash.

That's ok! I still love my little hen no matter what. All she has to do is lay eggs and look pretty.

Maybe I'll send Mandy a message and see what she thinks.

Thank you both of you!

Where did you get your 1 x1 wire at ? I have been looking and cant find the vinyl coated anywhere

It is wire from Riverdale mills out of Massachusetts. Quality is great. The catalog from where I got mine will tell you a lot. The other distributor has vinyl wire listed like you have been looking for.

I see a splash bird there. The feathers, on my computer, don't seem to have any white only a lighter shade of blue mixed in with a darker blue. There is a definite way to tell. Breed her to a black male or another splash male. With a black male, you should get all blue and with a splash male you should get all splash chicks.

A young splash pullet. She is out of my blue pen. I have high hopes for her.

This is a brother to the above pullet. He is an extra and I hate to see him not get used. He is only 6 months old, so should fill out to be a very nice boy. If anyone is intersted please PM me. He is out of my nice blue pen.

And if it was spring time I would definitely be interested in your cockerel.

Well, maybe I'll look into getting a splash rooster in the spring. I just bought a nice white breeding pair yesterday. I'll have to get some pictures later. Or, I'll just keep her for a pet and let her do whatever she wants. I still dream of having some columbians.

As much as I love roosters, I can't have too many of them with the space I have available..

This is my Blue Mottled girl that has too much white. She just went thru a tough molt. I expect that after her next molt, she will be even whiter.

FYI.............Spring is not the time to try and buy good birds. If you want something that is good and you can see what it's going to be, you need to buy in the fall when they are started. That's when the better breeders have the most birds available.
Just thought you would want to know.
