Cochin Thread!!!

FYI.............Spring is not the time to try and buy good birds. If you want something that is good and you can see what it's going to be, you need to buy in the fall when they are started. That's when the better breeders have the most birds available.
Just thought you would want to know.
Good point, didn't think that far ahead. Only reason why I had planned on looking in the spring is because that's when I'll have an empty coop for Cochins. Right now I have 3 of them living with the Silkies and I promised the boss I wouldn't add another heat lamp for the winter. lol I live on and work for a big non-profit farm with 60+ horses and 100+ other smaller animals. Trying to save on the expenses during winter season.
Anyway. I will definitely keep this in mind for future. Thanks!

These are my new breeding pair. Picked them up yesterday at Gaetano Farm. The cockerel is about 7 months old and pullet 6 months, pictures were taken by the breeder. Right now Beaker and Tinkerbell are outside beind rained on...and they look happier than pigs in poo.

Almost as dirty as well. lol I'll get some good pictures when they are dry. And clean.

So, I have this hen for a pet. I'm guessing she's a splash? Is this anywhere near being close to a proper cochin bantam splash? I can't seem to find any that look like this girl when I search Google for splash.

Would a hen that looks like this be worth doing anything with other than keeping for a nice pet? Her foot feathers are in terrible condition. I swear, there are more than this picture shows!

This is an Mottled Blue (project Ameraucana) too much white (obviously), but genetically she is homozygous for mo. She is not a splash.

Very pretty, I don't want to rain on your parade, but you might want to check your hens wings.

Nothing to me about this bird says Mottled. It is for sure a Splash, as there is no white on this bird anywhere, and she also has shafting all over her. She would be good to breed back to Splash for color, but her overall type isnt amazing.

I was thinking the eaxct same thing, her wing does not look like it should.

I'm pretty sure she had a missing feather that is now growing back in but I'll take a closer look tomorrow in day light. The breeder did show me her wings when I picked her up and I don't remember seeing anything negative. That doesn't mean that I'm not wrong. lol
I will do a wing inspection tomorrow.

I'm thinking she is a splash also after reading more about splash and mottled. I don't see any white tips on her feathers like a mottled should have.
She'll be just a pet. I don't want to go looking for a rooster for a hen that's just ok.

Thank you!

I know I already pm'd but for the sake of others that are just getting started, this is not a blue mottled. the base color is a light blue and there are no white tips. The splashed color is not there like it should be. There should be light feathers with splashes of blue on them covering no more than 50% of the bird. This one appears to have lots of solid feathers in both colors instead

Very interesting! I sure do appreciate this thread and learn a lot. She is a pretty bird no matter what.

Hey, you got to start somewhere, you cant always rely on just buying what you want, beed for it. ;) This bird isnt horrible, and if bred to a nicely typed male I think she could produce some nice chicks. Her color, as far as Splash goes, is really good. Just as Mandy said, she has a light Blue base color, not white like you see in most Splash that are posted here and other places, or even at shows.

Andy-
I'm wondering if you cockerel isn't a silver pencil rather than birchen. Much of the laced feathers looks to be doubled laced . I'm obsessed with blue based varieties so I would probably roll the dice and mate to blue.

Thanks mibirder,This is the problem i have with the boy, his father was a black frizzle, the mother was a white smooth, i have no idea what either of the backgrounds are, so i have no idea where these colours cam from. i am going to keep him and watch as he fulls in, but yes, the feathers in the chest are double laced, with white in the middle as well as the edges, I am going to give him a splash girl and a recessive white just to see what pops out, then i will have a better idea of what his background is.
