Cochin Thread!!!

I hate it when this thread gets so touchy-feely. I don't think I've ever heard anyone here say that they are an expert, or that it's their way or the highway.

We all love our Cochins, and everyone has their own reasons, expectations and goals. That's all good. EVERYONE is welcome on this thread.

If your birds are your backyard pets, that's perfectly fine. We all love seeing pictures of everyone else's birds. And we are more than happy to share in your joy and tell you how pretty they are.

BUT (and this is a big but!), if you ask us what we think, we can only assume you want an honest opinion and critique, which is what you will get.

And for those that are still upset with Craig for posting the "X to Y Cross" comment, it was my original comment - so get mad at me.

I was wondering about split wing. Will it show up in chicks early? I was looking at some of my chicks wings tonight and noticed that one of them shows split wing and didn't know if this is something that is too early to look for in a week old chick or not.

Any help would be appreciated.

True split wing will show up almost immediately, but be sure you really know what split wing is. Sometimes a weak wing can look a bit like SW and when the feathers are coming in there is frequently the appearance of SW if the feather located at the joint of the wing has not come in yet. So until you know for sure, don't get too anxious to cull early.

I think one week is way too early - I've had some look like split wings that early that mature just fine. I think there is really very little to cull for at one week except for grossly obvious DQ's.

Matt McCammon wrote an excellent article - I have it posted on the CI website on the Education tab. It's called "You Do Keep a Book, Don't You?". It's all about what to watch for at various stages of their growth. Just Excellent!

I was closley examining all of my chicks wings tonight and noticed a huge difference in this one chicks wings. I went on the CI website on the education page and found and article about wings. It really looked like it but with a yound chick I wasnt sure and it really didnt mention how early you can detect it.

Gail I have read that article but will go back and refresh what I have read. CI has a ton of information on it!

To quote Forest Gump, breeding chickens can be like a box of chocolates. My mother told me that the swirls on top told you what was inside after I squeezed them all looking for the carmel ones. To this day I think she fibbed to me as i have lots of squished coconut candies laying around!

As for the chickens, I'm a pretty good biologist and understand genetics, yet I always get a few surprises every year. Sometimes predicting x bred to y is like looking at the chocolates - you often never know 100% what's on the inside. Sometimes the chickens are like the chocolates - the only way to tell is to give a squeeze and see what you've got.

Darn, I was always looking for the coconut ones.

I agree, no matter how many punnett squares you do, something unexpected will generally rear its ugly head if you breed enough. At that point I usually email Tom and ask what the heck happened here. I think even the most experienced breeders get surprises.

Okay here it goes, my first post in this forum.....................

I was going to take my Blue LF Cockerel to Delmarva Show, but some family stuff came up. So I won't be able to go now. I am very bummed. I am looking for a critique=honest opinions please, and thank you.

I am not new to breeding chickens, I am new to Cochins. I have Black/Blue/Splash LF, and Mottled Bantams B/B/S.





I don't care who you are, a newbie or an "expert" please comment on my cockerel! I will try to get better pics if you need them, just let me know!

Aww, shame you can't go. I am (hopefully) going. I raise Splash bantams. I think he is pretty nice, I like his round tail. One too many points on his comb, but that's not such a big deal. Nice "pants" and good wing carriage.

Yes the 2 lavendar and the 2 splash are from you although I lost one of the lavendars over the winter. I just brought the splash pair in to separate them because I have no where else to put them right now I only have 1 coop. My rooster almost resembles yours!
