Cochin Thread!!!

Question: If you have a Cochin without the 5 points should he or she be used for breeding?  I mean would the kids have 5 points or is it something hard to breed out of them?

This is what I have in my notes. Taken from breeders who are far enough in their programs to do so. Keep 4,5,6 point combs-cull anything more or less. If your roo has incorrect amount of points breed to a hen with correct number and visa versa. Balance the faults not make them worse.

personally, comb is the last thing i pay attention to when working on a line of any breed (except for side sprigs)... once your type is good, then you can worry whether he's got a good comb or not. but even so, i think only having 4 points rather than 5 is a minor fault...
Well how about 2 LOL, I have a Millie I was going to use for breeding out more Millie's but after reading about the 5 point rule, now I'm debating on using him or just put him in the "pet Quality Section". LOL.

I wish this uploading picture thing would work but Ive tried three times and it just says one moment.. for like 15 minutes and still no pic..

Its a bit exasperated now, but as a newbie I want to add my 2 cents. In December I decided to start my 'dream' of breeding & owning Cochins...I had been raising some pq silkies for 4 years before.
I jumped in with two feet, Now I look back and regret asking some obvious questions..after some weren't answered I started researching...and found way more than I expected. If you are serious about breeding just dedicate some hours to reading. I havr read this WHOLE cochin forum, evert link on the CI website plus many many more pages. I have folders saved to.my comp, some pages I printed out and put in my binder...I have 'tip' lists wrote down etc. Research pays off, and personally I feel so much more educated, and I know fractions compared to others on this forum.

Congratulations. 1300+ pages is a lot to go through. What variety or varieties are you working with or that want to work with?

I do not worry about using a bird for breeding with 4,5,6 points. More or less than that I personally do not use them. An experienced breeder told me he commented to an old timer about 30+ years ago that he was having trouble getting combs right. The old timer got out a magnifying glass and looked at the hens to count the comb on them. After he started worrying about point comb on the hens his comb his issues were resolved. I don't currently have issues but if I start to have issuesI will look at the hen side too.

Insomnia has been troublesome for a few years, but with my Cochin research it has come.in handy for late night reading. :) I was just diagnosed with a hypothyroid and once my meds are regulated hopefully I will return to a normal person..until then I contunie to research Lol
