Cochin Thread!!!

my solution for lights like that, is to wire them in series... they will run off half the wattage they normally would, and produce less light, but more in the form of IR heat... and a bulb running at half capacity will last practically forever. there are some that have been running for close to a hundred years like that.

but then again, i prefer them to have a normal day/night cycle, so i use ceramic heat emitters. they don't produce any light, just heat. and i've never had one blow out, unless it was dropped.
hubby also suggested, and i didn't think of it. you can also use a 220 lightbulb in a 110 socket, it'll run at half the light output, but put out more heat than the comparable wattage lightbulb because it's phase shifted slightly to IR rather than visible light... you can purchase them online and thru some places that deal with commercial equipment (possibly lowes or home depot - not sure).

so a 220v light bulb rated for 100 watts would actually use about 50 watts of power, but put out about 60 watts of heat, and slightly less visible light. and running them that way, they will last practically forever. barring being dropped, earth quakes, & lightning strikes... if you don't believe me about light bulb life running at half the voltage, google it. there's a bunch of stuff out there about it.

Color help!!
I bought some "black" bantam cochins from a breeder in Ohio and they were said to be pure black and one of the hens as she matured got this funky coloring on her. Does anyone have any clue what color she may be??

Thanks in Advance!
