Cochin Thread!!!

Had a great day at Sedalia visiting and showing my birds. The Cochin class numbers were down a little but the quality of the birds was very good. The quality of these pictures does not do these birds justice. Not the best pictures but the 3 winning birds are excellent examples of exhibition quality Bantam Cochins.

Results from show at Sedalia yesterday April 20, 2013.
Annamay Carlson had Grand Champion of the 1st show with a Blue hen

Bernita Miller had a Black hen that was Reserve FL in 1st show and Champion FL in the 2nd show

Annamay Carlson had Reserve FL in the 2nd show with a Black Cock.

Congrats to the winners! These cochins are absolutely gorgeous!!!

Oh my goodness. So sorry for everyone that is having issues with birds being injured.

I was on the move this morning at 5 to go see the poultry show in Sedalia MO. Learned SO MUCH from the super Cochin people there-even a lesson in AI! I really recommend checking out any poultry shows in your area if you have the chance, I found it to be quite the experience and education. Also a plus to be able to meet other BYC'ers in person.

Congrats to the winners! Wish I would have known there was a show this weekend! I would have been there. I need to mark these things on my calendar so I don't forget!

-sigh- I get my blacks and everything that can does go wrong. The hen has either ear mites or an ear infection. Her ears are swollen, crusty and stink. The cockerel is still sneezing some. Anything other than Tylan I can use? Pen G?

You can try Oxytetracyclene. Its sold under the name Liquimyacin, pardon spellings. You can get it at TSC. It will also cover strep. Is she gulping like a bird with gape worm? The ear swelling, and gulping usually mean strep. Strep will also smell. Not like Myco or CRD, its got a sweet/sick smell. The smell is from there mouth being open. Hope this might help! You only give it every 3 days, it will stay in there system. Make sure to feed a probiotic, her norma flora could be off in a lot of places. Doses are the same as Tylan.

Yikes, you'd better get on that ear infection. Need to pull of any scabs, squeeze out all the pus, flush the ears with warm peroxide & water (50/50), then dry the ears with a Q-tip. It may take several cleanings and 3-5 days of antibiotics to see any improvement. Otomax ear ointment for dogs may help too. Can I come over & do her ears? I love treating infections (I was a Vet tech for 10 years). :)

Those were my thoughts too. I am 3 to 3 1/2 hrs away but I would have like to attended. Where is the best place to get show schedules and info?

Thanks,
Mary

http://www.poultryshowcentral.com/poultry-show-dates.html has shows/events listed several ways by dates and states. Or subscribe to Poultry Press which is shipped monthly.

To my knowledge there is no list or effort to post a show schedules on BYC at this time. I only see postings for individual shows posted by individuals

Woke up this morning to at least 26 chicks hatched so far. Blacks, Columbians, GL project, Silver Penciled and Partridge in this bunch for sure. More to go and more every week. Today is a GOOD day!

No gaping mouth but she did sound raspy while I was fighting with her head. I am not sure if it was because I was wrestling with her or if it was an actual issue. I haven't heard it in the past week while she's doing her thing. I am really hoping this is just mites. I will treat for an infection to, but still hoping it's not.
