Thanks its good to know just incase we get a very bad winterLOL i free range all my non-breeding (ie young or resting) stock and have never had a problem with the wet/mud/whatever affecting them. yeah the feathers get a bit worn looking much faster, but overall they stay pretty good condition... here's a group from a few days ago... my driveway turns to mush when it rains a lot. silver grey dorking hen, & a blue mille fleur bantam cochin (lower left) also 4 swedish flowers - had to put down 'underfoot' the roo bottom right today when he showed up with a shattered a leg - he'll be missed. they tend to get a bit soggy on the lower feathers, but once it's dry again they preen back to fluffy just fine.here's some more of my free rangers, a bit less muddy. this pic is from last december, when the cochin girl above, and the roo just below were chicks
this is kepiru, now in the breeding pen with his sire and 5 girls.
my (accidental) black-tailed red/columbian ?? roo, out of my mille fleur cochin pen, of all places. again same hatch as the others.

Quote: Thanks for the link! Is anyone on here planning to attend the Highland, IL show in June? That is less than 30 minutes away from me.A fall meet up at the Sedalia show sounds like a great idea as well!![]()
Thank you glad I could help. This web site has such a wealth of information. I don't think there is anything you could not find an answer to here.Thank you sooooo much that really helps, ovation achieved lol![]()
for a pen that size i probalby wouldn't go with more than 5 or 6 LF max... bantams, you could probably do 8 or 9 easily.Hi all...I'm just starting my flock and have been researching Cochins. I'm in love! I have a couple of questions though that I have been unable to find answers for (and I've been reading for days).
At this point I'm undecided between LF or bantam. I understand that LFs can get very big and have no problem with that it would like a little further info. Because this breed is so large, how small are the bantams in relation to other bantam breeds - particularly Silkies? Egg size in relation to other bantams?
I'm just south of Atlanta and summers are hot! I don't see Cochins listed on any of the "heat hardy" lists but have noticed other members in hot climates with beautiful specimens. My question is how well does the breed handle heat? Also, does one size take the heat better than the other?
Okay, one more...The portion of my coop I'm dedicating to the Cochins will have a 4x5 interior and an 8x10 run. If I decided to go with the LF, any idea on how many this size coop would accommodate?
Sorry for all the questions but I'm truly in love with these chickens and I want to get it right. Thanks in advance for any and all advice.![]()
