Quote: with the other laced types I've had, i'd say 3-4 months is a good estimate. those that look borderline, hang onto a bit longer 'just in case'...

the REALLY good lacing you can see pretty quick, but others take a bit longer.

here's a pic of a 4-5 week old blue laced red Wyandotte from my trio... for some reason my cochin pics won't load.

i'd say if you don't see some definite lacing by 6 weeks, it's not likely to get a LOT better, but like this guy, some of the smuttiness and such should clear out with his adult moult.

Thanks Ki4got. that boy has great lacing at such a young age.i assume the same principle would apply to silver pencilled and partridge then. i am struggling to find birds pure for Pg here, but if i can tell at that age then it should make culls a lot more noticeable.

Here is a pic of what i mean. All the partridge i am getting are impure for Pg, like the feather on the left.

Even if i assume that my cockerel and pullet are impure Pg/pg+ i should still have a 1/4 chance of getting proper lacing out of of their breeding. That is why i culled all my partridge chicks at about 8 weeks. Unless they are both pg+/pg+, but i hope that isnt the case.

Oddly all the partridge rocks here are pure for Pg, no one seems bothered that partridge and pencilled cochins are not though.

I honestly don't know. I am hoping that Coopa Cabana will see this and have an answer. She is better at tracking development. If anything like my Columbians I have to let them grow out to 4 months and only cull for things that won't change with molts like shafting, eye color, ect.
Craig

Thanks Craig. i can see why people here only breed black and shy away from the patterned birds. It does take a lot more time and effort.

Updated pics of my cochin boy - Monsoon (although I seriously think I should have called him Eeyore due to his personality)
smile.png

Still waiting for a crow - he's so mellow and quiet...
Guess he's turning out to more of a splash?

On a date with his girl "Daisy"

Upset with me for interrupting?

Photo bomb on the happy couple - lol

Running out the door...

He realized everyone else had "flown the coop" -
Taking the corner so fast, he looks like he only has one leg!

lol Great story line! And beautiful birds!

ok, here's a (maybe) silly question... I REALLY need some silver laced cochins that have GOOD lacing. I can't seem to find any, so i'm contemplating hatcheries.

do any of the hatcheries have better type on their birds than another might? I know results vary, but in general? not on other breeds, but silver laced cochins specifically. or gold laced even. whichever has better type. I can work on color as needed if the lacing is decent and type is ok.

Annabelle came from WELP hatchery and I love her lacing. I'll try to get a better picture of her tomorrow.

I ordered some through ideal poultry this spring, but I was fairly disappointed. Their type was horrible and the lacing was messy. Understand that I only ordered 6 of the silver laced cochin bantam chicks, so it's possible that I just had bad luck with the ones they sent. I have already sold them and I don't think that I have any good pictures of them, but I'll look.

I plan to try ordering from WELP hatchery next spring in the hopes of getting a couple more like the hen pictured.

Hello everyone, I have a question for anyone. I am wanting to build some breeding pens for my of Cochin. I have two choices within this one space. I am looking for. 1 rooster and 4-5 hens at most. Choice 1 is 2 pens of 6'8" wide by 9'10" deep (long). Choice two is three pens of... 4'5 wide by 9'10" deep/long. At this point with it cold, rainy I really do t want them outside as I plan to show some of them. So they are inside our old barn and WL need to separate them very soon.

well, I keep 2 roos and 4 hens (with occasional free ranging) in a 4x8 pen with attached 4x4 house... it's a bit crowded, but not badly so, as I have several roosts for them to get up onto. my new pens i'm building will be 6x8 with attached houses.

IMO your 3-pen setup would probably work just fine.
