Cochin Thread!!!

I have 4 bantam cochin chicks hatched under a broody bantam cochin hen. I just love the this breed! And after seeing the blue cochin, I think I need more!

this is what frizzle feathering looks like. This was a self blue barred at about 1 week. You can see the feathers already are different.

at 1.5 weeks a bit more obvious

and by now you know it's frizzled

Thank you!

My favorite Cochin is a blue cochin!

lucky me! I ordered meat chickens from McMurrray and filled in five cochins to make 15. :D Well ok I ordered five cochins and filled in with the meat chickens. Closer to the truth! Love my cochins! My oldest are about 9 weeks.

as for kepiru, I kept him based on his conformation over anything color wise... I've found a lot of the cockerels get those odd stiff central tail feathers, and to me that's a big no-no... my older male has them when he's moulting but they blend in once he's done. but this guy had a nice cushion from the start. as for the laced, I got lucky. the rest of the chicks hatched from the same breeder more recently (that I didn't lose to the raccoon yesterday) have poor lacing at best. 2 of the pullets are white with just tips the other I have left has more like wide shafts, not really true lacing. hoping she matures and develops better. they're only 7-8 weeks old right now. got the raccoon last night tho but he did manage to snag one of my mfc hens. the dog chased him off her tho so she's inside recovering from a couple bite marks.

for her.
hope she pulls through. I understand how frustrating that is. Just spent two weeks building a huge enclosure to protect my small flock.

i'll have to find a pic of her... I've got one chick I thought was black, but she's a muted black, not glossy, and has darker edging to the feathers... so i'm thinking she's actually a VERY dark blue. maybe I can catch her on the camera later today and get an opinion...

Can someone explain the mottling process of gold laced Chochins? How many mottles, what age until you have a good idea on lacing for male and female? Or if some e can post a thread that explains it, I'd appreciate it!

hey kaybee, there should be no mottling in any laced. The age seems very difficult to guess, but from what I have read people wait until first or second moult to cull for lacing.

Learning exactly when the males and females show good lacing seems to be what everyone is trying to establish. Some say 1 year. Some say earlier or later. lacing in cochins is still at prototype stage I believe, so it is very hard to say. I would love to hear from some breeders on this subject, as this is a question I have asked many times myself.

Your question doesn't seem to have an answer on any forum I have been scouring. What are your goals? What do you have currently?

The theory seems simple, the practice looks a lot more difficult. Look at the silver Ki4got posted recently, it has a fantastic single lace, but she mentioned the rest were no good. Same stock, different results.

If you contact Annamay, it is very unlikely that you will get chicks, you might however tell her what you're looking for and on occasion she or someone she knows may have a bird or some birds that are up for adoption. I can't promise that, but I have some from time to time so it's worth checking.
