Cochin Thread!!!

I figured SQ might cost me some money but I just like to have nice birds...

I'll go ahead and tell y'all that I am a 14 yr old junior and chickens are pretty much my life. When I'm not away from the house I'm in my coop, I won Junior Grand Champion this last January with a quail d'Anver... I love my birds and love learning as much as I possibly can about them. I think Cochin bantams are one of the most adorable birds out there and I am very interested in getting some. I have spent some good time looking for breeders lately of this breed and am keeping my eye out for more and more. I am buying all my birds myself and save up all money specifically for that purpose.

I love showing and breeding and think that genetics are really cool, hence the questions about colors...

I'm open to most any variety of cochin bantams and am looking for someone to help me... Thanks for all the nice input you are all soooo helpful to someone like me!

But PLEASE, keep the input coming! I am very open to what Anybody has to say

And please don't ignore me about this topic. Like I said, I am very knowledgable about chickens and know what I am doing
Congrats on your approach and outlook, getting in to it this early will stand you in great stead in the future. Keep the questions coming, and ask follows ups. Most people will be happy to help out.

For your question regarding colours, i can see why people are concerned about the crossing. I have to do it here as i have no option but to "create" certain colours myself, as they dont exist here and i cant ship eggs or birds in. I remember a breeder in Australia getting very good brichens and columbians from a single bird cross, i dont remember what it was, but i will look it up for you.

Crossing can be the only way to get somewhere or get better type into a line. But with so many enhancers, diluters and other genes hiding under the surface, i would always recommend getting stock that is what you want, and the best type possible, before considering an outcross.

I had no money at all as a 14 year old, so the fact that you have saved it up to buy your own birds speaks volumes about your commitment. I hope someone helps you out. If you were here i would tell you to come by and select a trio of something!

Good luck, keep us posted, and keep asking questions!

Are your LF cochins molting?!? I think my girl, Iris, is molting! It looks like there was a pillow fight in the coop under her roosting spot and the yard is dotted with fluffy blue cochin feathers!! I *hope* that is what it is....otherwise there is something crazy going on in the coop!!

The new additions seem to be much better this mornin!!!
? On wing feathers one girls wing feather are tore up will she grow new ones or is she just messed up?? I ask cause I have 2 production red hens who's wings were clipped when we got them and they haven't grown in new ones.
The boys have fussed at one another a lil but not too bad.

Yes, her feathers will grow back when she moults. no need to worry

i'm new to the chicken world and cochin breed do you have to trim up the feathers on the body or feet any

No you do not have to trim any feathers. Some people do trim the tails a bit, cos they don't like messy rears. Some show birds are trimmed too when being used for breeding only to increase fertility rates. I dont and havent had a problem so far. But i dont have show birds :)

Sanna how soon does frizzle show up in chicks?
This frizzle is just getting wing feathers. They curl and sort of a thin feather instead of a full width

This is a smooth that has feathers not laying close to the body. Not a frizzle. A real frizzle follows

Below is a Frizzle hatched at the same time as the bird above. They frizzle everywhere not just wings.
