Cochin Thread!!!

it all depends on which way the mille fleur evolved, whether it came from wheaten, partridge, or other color bases... if you have one with wheaten base and breed to a partridge base, the only thing that's consistent is the mottled.

that's why some peoples chicks are colored differently than others. mine are on a partridge line, so most chicks come out a golden brown color, while other people get more buff chicks, or other colors too for that matter.
When I got my Millie, they were suppose to have come from a Mille coop, I bought the eggs last year...and his group did all look like Milles. But when I took him and breed him with my Mille and calico hens in which I might add came from the same Millie place but at different times.

Now Like I said I'm getting penguins. Not all the eggs are penguins, I would say 4 out of 5 are penguins leaving me with that ONE Mille, very frustrating since I'm trying to build up my Mille Coop..

Can I have some opinions on this girl? She is about seven months old from Duane Urch. I plan on showing her at county fair next month. She just started laying last week.

The injury on her beak is from a squabble with the roo, it's healed now.

I know that's not the greatest picture, but it really shows her good wing carriage and nice bunny tail.

Of course, like all Cochins, she is super friendly and is always up in your business. It was extremely difficult to get decent pictures. Some things I like about her are her wing carriage, good foot feathering, great eye color, and nice ball tail. Some things I don't like about her is she has some shafting, and her comb.

Question, I have a Mille Rooster, calico hen with a couple of Mille hens. Hatched out babies and they look like Penquins??? Occassionally I get a Mille but for the most part Black and White chicks? Why is this happening when I don't have any whites or blacks in this coop??

Many start with Buff Columbian, Mottled as a first cross when attempting to build Mille. I am betting you are getting an occasional throwback to the Mottled.

Hi Everyone!

I'm pleased to introduce you to my new Cochin bantam chicks who turned 4 weeks old today! They are from Ideal Poultry.

I was thinking that the one in photo 1 could be a roo, but it feathered out much quicker than the others so maybe a hen? I'd love to hear what you all think as far as sex goes!

Bantam cochins are supposed to have the bunny tail?

From what I understand from descriptions in the standard, and talking to experienced Cochin breeders, all Cochins should have a bunny tail. If you were to face one head on a put a circle around the bird, it should fill most of the circle. Also, if you'll look at champion Cochins in shows, they'll have bunny tails. Anyone else with more on this, please chime in.0

Are the mottled? Cochins hard to get or are the a little more common? I love them and am thinking about getting some. Just wondering how hard they are to get and can they only be bred to each other?
