Cochin Thread!!!

Yea! My babies have hatched! Only 8 out of 20 shipped eggs, though.

I'm really kinda disappointed about that. BUT! I will take pics and post them. I was taking pics of my Button Quail yesterday and the camera died the 3rd bird in, so I had to stop to charge the batteries and when I finished taking pics later, I forgot about taking the other pics b/c ti was late and I had to get ready for work.

I tried reading the pencil on top of the eggs, but a couple were cracked/broke right where it was written so I'm not positive I'm right, but, if I AM right, this is what hatched: 2 columbian, 1 birchin, 1 lavender, 2 buff barred, 1 silver laced, and 1 mille/calico project.

3 of them seem kinda weak, though. Is that normal? This is my 1st hatch. Also, some are crusty. Like some had stuff stuck to them I had to peel off and there are like 3 that look wet, but when you touch them they're hard & crusty. I put them in the brooder so they can eat/drink. But I'm thinking about taking a warm washcloth and wiping them down good and sticking them back in the incubator to stay warm and dry off for a couple of hours. Do you think that's a good idea?

First question, no it's not normal for them to be weak, but it sounds like they're lucky to be alive - kind of a rough trip from fertility to hatch. Second, the crustiness is not uncommon, but yes it would be good to use a very warm wash cloth and try to wipe it off. Usually, if I have a chick that comes out with membrane or shell stuck to them, I take them to the sink and wipe them off with warm water and my finger. Then when they dry they fluff up as they should. It would be good after you rinse them off to put them back in the incubator for warmth, or if your sure of your brooder and the other chicks aren't to far ahead you can put them back with them. Watch them though as the others could be attracted to picking on them when they are wet. The water should be surprisingly warm, not HOT but very warm. If you have a thermometer, check the temp and try it at about 90 F or 95 F, don't soak them just dip your finger in the water and gently wipe them.

Quote: personally, unless it's like a hard glaze, I usually leave it alone and their movements and snuggling with the others will fluff them up quickly.

as for weak, like lilcrow said, no that's not normal... I would maybe give each weak chick a drop of poly-vi-sol vitamins (no added iron) and put some in the water as well... that sometimes helps slow starters for me. I've noticed some breeds seem to need a bit of a jump start more than others, but cochins have never been one of them.

I keep the poly-vi-sol on hand though because of those breeds that seem to be slow starters. figure it can't hurt to add a bit to their water for the first week. and they seem to like the taste so they drink plenty.

I'm curious - is there a cochin thread for people who just enjoy their cochin chickens for their personalities and as pets, but aren't raising show quality/breeding quality birds?
I love cochin chickens, but I just can't relate to any of the posts in this thread, as they are mostly for/about/relating to showing/breeding birds. Trust me - I'm all about that! It's people like all of you who have given me great quality stock (thanks, y'all!), but I'm really just a happy chicken owner who wants to share my chickens' stories, pictures and interesting characters with other people who have tiny backyard flocks.

Let me know, and thanks again!

They all seem to do doing ok now but for one or 2. They're both crusty, and the one seems kinda more so than the rest. So I'm wondering if it hurts to move, like if it's movements are stretching and pulling the skin. I will go and run them under warm water & use my finger and put them back in the incubator for a cpl hrs. Thanks!
