Cochin Thread!!!

It did not take me long to decide a rooster really belongs outside. Mr. cochin cockerel started crowing briskly and without stopping at 5:50 am this morning. His nice bunny hutch is now moved to the garage. He has a big window right over him and plenty of bedding to scratch around in where I won't be allergic to it.

I am loving how my cochins look now that it is getting colder. I thought they looked poofy before, but now they do truly look like little basketballs when they are sitting there trying to puff up and keep cozy.

Yes, the living alarm clock must be put outside of the bedroom, I fully agree with that choice.

I use playground sand in my coop it dries easy doesnt stink, dries up the droppings quickly, and you take her droppings out with a kitty litter spoon. I love it. It may be a bit dusty, but it is and not wood so maybe it wouldn't aggravate your allergies:) Hope that helps

X 2 on the Sand. and use a " Chicken Only " cat scoop to clean out also it fluffs up doing it. dries out dropping's. have not noticed dust xcept when I put fresh in. I'm allergic to Hay most all Grass types. so when we started Chicken raising I realized it needed to be Sand we use AP sand in Both the LB main coop and runs. as well as in Banty's run, coop is Pine shavings. helps keep them warm in awkward Unheated coop.

Silver blue? Is there a variety called silver blue?

I believe it is birchen

On the birchen e-allele there are four basic varieties - only 3 are standard in Cochins. Black body with silver produces Silver Birchen also called just Birchen. With gold instead of silver you have Brown Red or Gold Birchen. If blue replaces black you have Silver Blue and Lemon Blue respectively. You could also get a splash based in either silver or gold but their coloration isn't very distinguished. The splashes are great for breeding with black bases as they produce all blue bastd offspring.
