Cochin Thread!!!

LOL I was telling hubby about Gail feeding him the bacon bits... I think that had something to do with his fondness. but he is a love, so he'll mooch all the attention he can get even if food isn't offered.

HA!! Well I didn't see her feeding him but I'm sure you're right, that will always endear a person to any dog.

So this is my first year with silver laced Cochins.... And really my first year at trying to get any that I can breed to get good quality so I can show someday. It's sooo hard! I get a better body but crappy lacing, get good lacing but crappy body or something crazy like lack of feathering on the middle toe. How do you guys do this? Is there anyone out there with good SL that I can just buy good quality adults from, and then hatch babies? Or do I just keep hatching eggs and out of 50 maybe get one good one?! How should I go about breeding these to get good ones? Uggg and thanks.

hatch as many as you can and keep only the best few... I think silver laced nearly everywhere are a challenge right now (bantam cochins that is).

I did see a few decent ones at the show, but they were birds from just a few people, and I think were mostly related to the same lines, but not positive.

there was 1 silver laced roo there that I would have loved to bring home to my girls, but I think his owner might have noticed him missing. and probably known who to look for... LOL

This is accurate information. All the best SL came from Darrin Day or Annamay Carlson birds. Only a few people in the country with OK SL at this time. We are trying hard to get more and develop them. It does take hatching quite a few and keeping the best. The best show birds do not always make the best breeders. https://www.facebook.com/groups/384604001637431/ for a thread on Rare and Parti colored Cochins. A great place to start. Welcome to the world of Cochins.

Thanks guys! Makes me feel better that at least I'm having issues like the rest;)

Has anyone tried crossing silver laced and black? If so, how many generations did it take to get the lacing back?

I'm thinking about crossing a silver laced cochin bantam rooster with a nicely typed black hen this spring in an attempt to improve type in my SL's.

I had a wonderful time at the Knoxville show, but wish I would have had the time to introduce myself to more of you. I ended up underestimating how much time a trip to the Smokey Mountains National Park would take, but I am still glad my husband and I made the drive down there on Saturday and did a bit of hiking, as it was so beautiful and certainly like nothing we have here in Michigan! I ended up making it back to feed and water my cockerel at 5:59 pm right when lights were going out. I also forgot my camera - seems to be a trend - so have no photos of the park, OR the lovely chickens.

It was my first show ever, and my mottled cockerel placed a 2nd, so I am pretty happy with that. He is young at only 5 1/2 months so he still has quite a bit of growing in to do yet. I am tickled pink about returning home with three of Judy Gantt's mottled lovelies. My husband had a good laugh at me, since I couldn't stop staring at them in the back of our minivan, the whole drive home to Michigan. I knew I would be getting good birds from her, but I didn't know she would be selling me the birds that would place BV and RV! They will certainly be getting the royal treatment here... I agree that a lot of the mottling is too large on many birds I see. Not necessarily too many mottled feathers, but the feathers that are mottled should have the 1/4"-3/8" chevron tip and not a big blob.

I just found out this morning that my "Cozy Cochin Cottage" was chosen as coop of the week here on BYC, so I have one more chicken-related thing to be excited about!

I ordered myself a pair of Carhartt women's coveralls this morning for when I do my chicken chores. I was complaining about the weather in Tennessee, and then return home to 15 degree Michigan weather and lots of snow fall. Um, I guess Tennessee wasn't so bad after all....
