Cochin Thread!!!

I was curious if there were any dedicated breeders of Cochins on this thread that were trying to restore this breed to its original genetics of being an excellent dual purpose bird known for meat and egg production?

I know there are a number of LF cochin breeders raising awesome birds to the SOP. now whether that was the 'original genetics' I have no idea...

my own heritage breed are Dorkings and my cochins are bantams.

My Luna is almost 25 weeks. When do they start to lay?

I think the breed needs to have people working on preserving the existing recognized varieties. Only a few are regularly seen in a show hall.

In my opinion Dual purpose is a joke and always has been.. That means it doesn't do anything efficiently. Best chance for that is to buy some from a hatchery. I say that since hatcheries earn $ selling chicks which require the hens to lay quite well.

I don't find it to be a joke with breeds that are truly dual purpose, though I think a lot are listed as dual purpose that truly are not. The only breed I've seen so far that I consider truly dual purpose is the White Rock breed, that can lay as well as a BA, lay through the winter even and for many years, but has more meat density of any breed of chicken I've ever owned.

Supposedly, the Cochin breed had similar qualities before arriving in the states and sparking a market for pet quality birds, wherein the better qualities were allowed to be bred out. I'd love to see this nice breed be restored to a more useful purpose and was wondering if any of the breeders on this thread were dedicating their efforts to meat and egg production in their lines?

I personally have no interest in eating any of my chickens. I'd rather fork out the bucks to buy an already dressed chicken that I don't know personally, but sounds like a good project for someone who wants that ... like you, maybe. :)

Considering that Cochins spend so much time being broody and molting, etc., I don't consider them great for egg laying, and I would never eat them. I just want Cochins bred to the SOP to raise and enjoy them walking around on my property and breeding them.

I guess that would be a "no", then, on that question!  :D   Didn't want to have to reinvent the wheel if someone is already having good success out there and can sell some eggs or chicks.  ;)

Yeah, probably a no. Haven't seen one other person who seemed interested in that in this thread anyway. Not saying there isn't one lurking somewhere. Just haven't seen it. Seen people who just love the breed, as I do and people who want to show the breed (as I might sometime).

I eat all my roosters when I hatch out eggs and they grow up some...

Everyone wants hens and never roosters. Some sell but most don't so instead of giving them away where someone else is gonna eat them, I do as I LOVE eating chicken. I grew up raising my own food, and even tho it sucks having to butcher them, I also know where my meat is coming from and know my bird never suffer as I am very humane about the process. So in my case here at my farm, they are a dual purpose bird... pets, breeders, feather babies, and food in both eggs and meat.
