Cochin Thread!!!

Here are some updated pictures of my babies. Can anyone help me with color and pattern names. Also IF the sex is apparent maybe help there too. If the Curved comb vs. the straight comb is accurate I believe they are all girls except for 1. This is the boy I think. Is this typical of feathers when they come in or is he being picked on? This one is a late bloomer with the feathers on the feet does that mean it could be a cross breed? girl? No feathers on feet so she is a cross breed. Straight comb = female? color and pattern? Female? color and pattern? female? This is another picture of the boy. There are a couple more that wouldn't hold still long enough for me to snap a good picture.

Ok I'm still learning on Cochins but I'm going to give it a shot to compare to what everyone else says so I can see how I'm doing . I used the straight vs. curved comb on my chicks and it seems pretty accurate to me. If day by the pics u have the all sexed correctly The ones with out feather feet are not full Cochins or either pet quality birds. Prob mixes. (But still cute) The little white pullet looks like a columbian. Again I'm still learning here my self but hope I'm right. Beautiful chicks!!!!

Well, there are a lot of things to consider when choosing a breed. It would be helpful if you shared what it is you're looking for in a chicken. Is it important that they be docile, decent egg layers, is egg size a priority, do they need to be quiet, do you have space limitations, will you be letting them out to free range or do they need to tolerate confinement to the coop better than others, do you have any appearance preferences, does adult size matter? etc.

For instance, we have a very playful 7 lb Pomeranian who would not play gently if he ever got ahold of one of our chickens. So we chose breeds for the most part which would be large enough to intimidate him & make him back down with their size - no bantams for us.

Hi. Just wanted to share some pics of my Cochins. Last April I got an order from Meyer. I ordered 6 blue Andalusion and 9 "rare breed egg layer assortment" to split with my cousin. I ended up with 5 Cochin and they are so pretty. I placed the smallest one which was black and kept one blue cochin, one partridge and two whites. I also kept a Sicilian buttercup, and 3 what I think are Andalusion, one blue, one black and one splash. The true blue Andalusion was the prettiest but she got killed in a freak accident so of all those I ordered I don't have any blues left but love the other colors just as good. But I was blessed with a beautiful blue Cochin girl we named Henrietta (granddaughter picked out name). The partridge chick I picked out from the start and named her Beatrice. Oh and we also got a silver laced Polish- that one was easy to figure out the breed. I'm not sure all of the BA really are BA bc if you add up the numbers it would mean that I received more than I ordered of them, so I'm hoping that the splash or black hen is another breed of some sort.

Anyhow you will see in the pics that Beatrice had a name change to Mr. Beasley. Sigh. My white Cochin are named Mabel and Maude. The Polish is Veetrol. The black Andalusion Is Esther, the splash is Thelma Lou.
