Cochin Thread!!!

Hi, I'm hatching out my first cochin eggs in about 9 days.  I should be getting a variety of different colors, is there any sex link or auto sexing to this breed? I've read how calm the hens are but how are the Roos? Are they loud and proud with their crowing or mild and quiet like the hens?  Any info would be great, Thanks

My Roo's are sweet and great. But they do like to crow and show off...starting at sunrise about 5:30. My little girls really like them too...but we have bantams so they can hold and handle them.

Here are some of my 7 week old chicks. I love them! Really working on starting my own line and breeding to standard. We enjoy showing, so hoping these grow out good to add to our flock. :)

I have 2 partridge cockerels getting big right now. They are pretty calm and cool, but aren't crowing yet. They spend most of their time evading my BCM rooster.

Let me know how the are when they start crowing. I would like to keep a cockerel from this hatch without getting into too much trouble with the neighbors!

Hi cochin freinds!!!!
Some of you know the story of rainbow my rescued chicken! Well I got my first egg from her today!!!! It was tiny I took pics but once again can't get them to upload :( but anyway it was the size of a robin egg, maybe just a tad bit bigger. She is a standard size chicken, so I don't think she feels 100% better yet but she's getting there!!!!! Oh and I thought she was a game hen it was hard to tell from all her missing feathers but she is either a ameruacana, Easter egger or olive egger. Her tiny egg was a beautiful sage green color.
Wow, I love colored eggs! I'm so happy she is doing better. I wonder how old she is...

My partridge roo started crowing at around 12 wks. I was hoping he wouldn't be loud and vocal bc I have a grouchy neighbor. So far he his crow is not that bad, kind of low pitch and he only does it for about three or four times each morn. He's about 17 wks now. A gorgeous boy so he's staying yeah! Now the buttercup boy we had to find a home for once he learned how, he crowed all the time. That lucky boy got a home where he is only roo to 30 hens. That should keep him busy. :)

Hope he stays a mild crower!

How many colors have been bred that is not recognized?. In bantam cochins.

I do not know the answer to that question. I do know that Splash Bantams are on track to be recognized after final qualification meet in November. Self Blues are making progress also. Mille also should be but I don't see leadership and oganization to focus on recognition.
This is the list of APA recognized colors as of July 2010. The ones only recognized by the ABA are at the bottom of the list

Hope this helps someone.

I have to say my SL cock is much louder and more aggressive than any of my Blacks or Columbians. They crow a little in the AM and are generally calm. Multiple cocks will have their fights if not kept separated.
