Cochin Thread!!!

The purple (which I don't see on my little phone screen) is most likely the blue coming through as most black Cochins come from a blue line. What I see is a green sheen, and yes, it is a desirable feather trait.

They both look very nice, but I agree that #2 may have better composition: rounded compact body, full round chest. Nice stance, leg spacing, round head & tail (feathers should be tighter with less spacing) short wings.

is there a good site with bantam cochin sop or someone who could share it with me I want to raise bantam cochins of various colors but also want to keep them looking right ?

I don't know about LF Cochins specifically, but I'm certain bantams and pretty sure about LF that they do not come from Blue breedings. Actually the Blacks are the most heavily shown and bred Cochins in the US. There have been endless discussions with as many theories as there are Black breeders about where the green sheen comes from and what will improve it in the breeding pens. What I can say about sheen is that purple is NOT a desirable sheen and they are usually culled from a Black breeding program. Just from what I can see in your pictures is that the green sheen looks to be present and well distributed on the bird. I prefer the type on the second bird, but I don't see as much green on the second bird. As a matter of fact he almost looks dark Blue in one of the pictures. After all this discussion about sheen, I would still say you have two very nice large fowl Blacks. (blue?)

This is completely off topic but I'm curious about the bird that is in the background of last picture. It is to the left and back of the subject of the pic. Almost looks like a LF Birchen. ???

If nobody else notices it, then I'm probably just seeing a light reflection or something. The first guy does have more green than the second, or that I notice at least. The second guy is for sure black, not blue, he was in different lighting? So the 2nd would be worth getting a couple girls for? I think I would just breed for myself, but I do enjoy showing whenever I get the chance.

If we are talking about the same one, and I'm pretty sure are, that's my silver grey Dorking cockerel.

Wing Carriage is often the difference between a good bird and a so so one.

Ahhhh.....that's why it appears to be a Birchen pattern, it almost is. Minor differences but they're there.

Ok i have a question so I'm showing some Cochins this year in 4-h but I know how you show showmanship but how do you do just the breed I really don't know and need help!!!

At my fair there are classes. I'm not sure what class a large fowl cochin would be in but a bantam would be in the feather leg class. And you would take your cochin up and put it in a cage. Then a judge would walk around and take the birds out of the cage, examine it maybe ask you a few questions. Then they would decide which bird was best. I am in 4-h and I will be 15 soon

Little, I don't know about fairs and I think they do things a little differently. In regular open shows it is forbidden to be in the aisle with the judge. The intent is keep the owners anonymous. The bird is simply displayed in a cage. All the work has been done over the past 6 mo or so to prepare the bird for the show.
