Cochin Thread!!!

My son wanted me to see the feathered feet.

I got my first cochins yesterday. Mr. Darlin' is the roo and his sweetie is Priss. He is black and she is a blue frizzle. I have put them in a separate pen from the flock and everyone seems happy. I brought them home yesterday and she left an egg in her new nest this morning. They are both vry friendly. Is it likely for her to go broody often? She is 14 months....he is 7 months. I was thinking she might hatch other eggs for me if she is broody by nature. Not sure if he is old enough to be a papa. I may purchase eggs.....

I got two new brown red hens/pullets yesterday. They had a longer than ideal trip as the PO lost them for a day, but to my pleasant surprise, they both arrived safely without any issue. Today, I noticed the hen was laying down all day. I was getting concerned so I went into their quarantine area and tried to get her to move. To my surprise, she said no and then showed me the edge of an egg she is sitting on!!! I could not stop laughing! After a 2 day trip from PA to MA in a small box, she has decided to go broodie. I may love this hen already!

She was with a rooster in her previous home, but it was a birchen rooster. Not a perfect cross for a brown red, but after all she has been through, I didn't have the heart to take it from her. After quarantine she will go in with my lemon blue rooster.

I've been trying to locate pure Cochins, but all I've been able to find are mixed with silkies etc. I'd rather not go through a hatchery, i'd rather use a breeder who is striving to better the breed. If anyone has a contact I would appreciate a note, meanwhile I'll follow along so I can keep my eye on the positive aspects of the breed to look for in my own yet to be Cochins.
