Cochin Thread!!!

I hope Stumpy is hardy enough to do his business, or I will have to replace him. He us starting to grab the girls by the combs but that's all so far. Hope he doesn't injure himself more with his attempts.

I have a question.

I have had Chickens for 6 years now. This is my first year with Cochins I have bantam and LF they are in separate pens. They are all 30 weeks old this week. The LF have not started to lay yet. is this unusual? The LF are in the pen with the older chickens however they will not go in the coop at night. in Texas so it is not a real big weather issue. Now for the last 2 weeks I havent gotten 1 egg out of the coop or run!? None of them are laying

Any ideas suggestions or facts would be appreciated.

Thank you all

Some cochins can take up to almost a year to start laying, 6-8 months is the average. The bigger the chicken the longer it takes to mature and begin laying.

I am always surprised how small the eggs are for the size of the chicken. Most larger breeds don't reach full size until two years old, they slowly thicken and fill out.

when i first got my cochin pair i had to place them in the coop at night. after a few days they went up on their own. put them in the coop when the sun goes down. after a few days of waking up inside their coop they will go in on their own.

I had to place my Cochins in the coop as well at first, but if I turn the light on inside the coop now they head in a bit early on their own.
