Cochin Thread!!!

Ive heard you can sex a cochin after a few days old because of their feathers. How? Im a first time owner and am very curious since my 2 blue cochin are straight run. I kept 2 of the 5 that I ordered and passed the other 3 on.I kept the black one because it was sooo pretty. My other 4 chicks(different breed) already have wing feathers, and neither one of my cochin do.Hmm...I know its probably too early,im just excited!.

I tried it with my last hatch of 7 and it was reasonably accurate. At one week of age the pullets appear to be more feathered than their brothers. The tails start earlier on the girls and the wings are more feathered. Out of my 7, 3 appeared to be pullets and I banded them with a pink cable tie. Now at 4 weeks, the "girls" seem to be 2 pullets and 1 cockerel. So I have 5 cockerels and 2 pullets. Gotta take that sissy pink band off the cockerel!

Guess I'm the only one with Birchen Cochins. All I have is two roo's and no hens. Haven't been able to find anything but hatchery chicks. Hate to have to wait on chicks to mature!

I can sex mine pretty early, with in 3 to 4 weeks. I've never been able to sex a cochin(at least the colors I raise) in a few days:)

Many times the little cockerels will already be sprouting a small comb, it will be much more prominent and pinkish then the females. Females usually feather in more evenly....wings, back, legs and head. Where the males have more wing feathers and hardly any feathers on the back, very little on the legs, they usually will chest bump and show more aggressive behavior then the females:)

Good luck,
Shari
