Cochin Thread!!!

it takes about a year for a cochin or brahma to be old enough to lay. most of mine are 13 months old. they just now started laying really well. my oldest is a blk roo and it took him 2 years to become flock head and for most of the girls to like him.

Really??? Mine are both about 6 months old, give or take a couple of weeks, and have started squatting... their tiny combs and wattles have gone red so I'm expecting eggs at some point soon. Is this normal?

My girl is 11 months and hasnt started laying yet.

I love the Bantam cochins....

Mottled is a popular variety and is just as beautiful, I think.

Beautiful pics, Erin. I especially love the Columbians in the basket.

Lanissa, you'd love the bantams. They're so personable. As for which color variety, that's really hard to say. I've got white, black, columbian, and mille fleur. The all have awesome personalities. I have to say, though, the mille fleurs are the most fun to hatch. Because they're project birds, you never know what those babies will look like when they hatch, and they change daily. What they're going to look like as adults is always a mystery. And my Columbians, I got from Erin, of course. They are such sweet birds, and beautiful to look at.

Whichever color you decide on, you'll be happy with them, I'm sure. They're just fun little birds. If I had to get rid of everything but one breed, it would definitely be my bantam Cochins. They're my babies.

I think I have decided to go with Bantam cochins and keep the three silkies that I already have. I am now researching colors. My favs so far are the Mottled, Mille Fleur, and Columbians!

With Spring coming up, I think I may be in the mood for some hatching! Maybe I will get to experience a broody hen for the first time this year as well?

I've been quietly lurking and drooling over everyone's cochins for a while.

Thank you so much for sharing your photos!

I love cochins, too! I am working on a small project - breeding giant frizzle cochins - and I've just gotten my first few eggs...

Here are a few pictures of my adult roos (I have 18 LF cochins, so I won't post photos of them all...)

This is Michael - he's my black frizzle roo. He's 9 months old. (Named after Michael Jackson on a bad hair day.)

Here is Stoney - this is my smooth splash roo. He is 20 months old.

This is Smitty - my frizzle black barred roo. He's also 9 months old.

And my last adult roo is Bart - also known as Big Bad Bart - he's my smooth black roo - also 9 months old. (Not a great shot - wish he was standing up straight so you could see how big he is in comparison to the hens behind him.)
