Cochin Thread!!!

Thanx Tom! This is my first season where I'm really going to have to do some serious culling. Hopefully, with everything I've learned from CochinsRule, BYC, and my Standard of Perfection, I'll make some half-way intelligent and correct decisions. Wish I could let them all grow out a bit more - most are at 2 months, and I really only have another month to make my decisions. I'd give anything right now to have a few more years experience under my belt.

I've started with the best breeding stock I could afford from the best breeders, and while I can see that it's definitely given me an edge, I can also see that there are no guarantees as to what faults the offspring may have.

cochinman2005 - Membership runs Jan. 1st - Dec. 31st, so if I were to send in membership dues to Cochins International right now, would that only be good through Dec. 31st? And then I'd have to renew right away in January to be good through the end of next year?

And, since I'd feel funny posting anything without a picture to accompany it, here's one of my newest additions enjoying a day in the yard - they're so funny, I put a little scratch out for them, and they'd rather eat from our hands than off the ground! They just look up at me like, "We're much too pretty to eat food out of the dirt!"

I'm going to take some pictures of them eating off silver platters for next time I post!

And I'm going to get some pictures of my new Cochin coops too. They look really sharp, mostly stained with redwood stain, but the front and back walls/doors (the whole walls are hinged to open for cleaning) are a really crisp white. I lost about a pint of blood to the mosquitoes while I was out working on them, but they're SO worth it. I wanted coops befitting the gorgeous birds that would be living in them.

Normally what we do for new joins that join late in the year is have those dues cover the current year and then the next, so if you were to send your dues in this fall, then you should be good for 2011 as well. Feel free to mention I stated this to Matt when you fill out the form. Just add a note to him on the bottom.

I posted this exact question on CochinsRule a month ago - didn't get an answer.

davony's chicks :

That is one beautiful bird! I cant wait to see the pictures of them eating off the silver platters! LOL

Well, I actually did it! Just with one bird - they can see their own reflection in the silver, and it spooks them a little at first. Maybe serving their meals in crystal dishes would be more ideal?

austinhart123 - Thanks! I have a little flock of them going now (just got my first Blue Mottleds last month), and I've got a deal in the works to get some hatching eggs in a few weeks from a completely unrelated flock so I'll have some different blood to play with in the spring too.

These guys all came from alwayscochins and theimis67 here on BYC, and between what the two of them told me when I bought them, I believe their background is mostly Jamie Matts. I know Keith (alwayscochins) had one of the hens I ended up buying shipped directly from Jamie.

They're all molting like mad right now, so they don't look their best:

Coopa Cabana - I saw where you'd posted that question on the Cochins Rule board! I figured I'd have a better shot of getting a quick reply on here since I know Tom drops in pretty often - plus, I thought I'd ask here, instead of privately by e-mail, in case anyone else wanted to know!

Quick question for the breeders with mottles. How much white do these birds have as juveniles and is it an indication of how much they will have a adults? Also, as they age, is there much change in there markings over the years? dak
