No, I don't think the amount of white they have as juveniles correlates to how much they'll have when they're mature. I'm not 100% sure though - I've only raised one Mottle from a chick so far, and he started out all black with a white breast, and he's just now molting and starting to look a little bit Mottled (which is what I've also seen in people's pictures of Mottled chicks and juveniles - dark with white breasts, and then mostly dark, and then more white mottling after their first year). I think they tend to get more white with age too (or am I thinking of age-white in self-colored ducks

?). But, someone like thecochincoop or BlueMottie could probably tell you for sure. I don't know what I'm talking about half the time.

This is a 6 week old LF pullet. Is this juvenile white feathering or a possible mottled?

I would say mottled.

no doubt about that, lol. I just meant I have high hopes for his type. The only girl in the bunch is the one to the front if the picture

Well, I actually did it! Just with one bird - they can see their own reflection in the silver, and it spooks them a little at first. Maybe serving their meals in crystal dishes would be more ideal?

austinhart123 - Thanks! I have a little flock of them going now (just got my first Blue Mottleds last month), and I've got a deal in the works to get some hatching eggs in a few weeks from a completely unrelated flock so I'll have some different blood to play with in the spring too.

These guys all came from alwayscochins and theimis67 here on BYC, and between what the two of them told me when I bought them, I believe their background is mostly Jamie Matts. I know Keith (alwayscochins) had one of the hens I ended up buying shipped directly from Jamie.

They're all molting like mad right now, so they don't look their best:

Coopa Cabana - I saw where you'd posted that question on the Cochins Rule board! I figured I'd have a better shot of getting a quick reply on here since I know Tom drops in pretty often - plus, I thought I'd ask here, instead of privately by e-mail, in case anyone else wanted to know!

That is great! They look like they deserve to eat off silver platters! LOL
thanks for sharing

I am raising my first batch of mottleds. I bought some adults this spring and I have 10 chicks right now ranging from one day to about 8 weeks old.

When I start getting eggs, I'll have to let you know, Laurie! I know how hard you've been looking for Whites lately! I just got a gorgeous trio a little over a week ago...but, with the shock of moving to a new place and everything, I really don't expect to see any eggs until next spring now.

Besides, they're so fluffy, I'll have to trim them up or do AI a few weeks in advance, and I haven't bothered because I'm done with eggs for the year - the last ducklings are hatching under a broody as I type!

Here they are anyways, just for fun. Sorry for the huge, ugly copyrights on the pictures - I've seen too many BYC member's pictures stolen and used without permission on other websites lately. I don't want my pictures popping up to sell someone's hatchery Cochin eggs on ebay or anything like that.

One of the girls had her head a little picked by the other girl - nothing major, but I stained her feathers putting some Blue-Kote on it just after I took these pictures, because it looked scabby and nasty and I wanted it to heal up nice and quick. At least it's healed up nice now. Just wish her head wasn't blue-violet!
