Cochin Thread!!!

Wow, Cochinman... super shape and clean as a whistle!! I see one tiny black speck up by her wing crease. What are her primaries looking like?

Super girl... Im definitely having cochin envy right now

That's actually a spot of undercolor showing through. Secondary markings are pretty good. Primaries are typical in that they don't have the required solid Black edged with white. Hackles are pretty crisp although she's molting like a fiend so she is a bit rough in that area. I'll take a few more pics of other pullets. They are fairly consistent as far as hackle and being clean without smut across the cushion, which is a step in the right direction. The cockerels are way farther behind as far as maturity.

Here are some pictures of my Wheaten Cochin project.

My first ever blue wheaten it just happen to come out frizzle.

Two little wheaten roosters and a pullet

A little older wheaten pullet.

I was just wondering if anybody else is working on Wheaten or Blue Wheaten?

It's a judgement call. You certainly wouldn't want to show a bird that was so young it still peeped, but certainly anywhere from around 8 or 9 months to a year, they should be ready to show as pullets or cockerels. I don't think I've shown any large fowl that are younger than 9 months ever. They just aren't mature enough nor do they have the size to compete against a more mature bird. I've seen plenty of times where a bird that is still in the gangly awkward stage is put in the show, but they don't get more than a glance from the judge, or they may get "age" marked on the coop tag or something similar. I wouldn't waste the entry fee on a bird that is too young.

Thank you. What a spectacular pullet! I was a little concerned about my 5-month-old when I saw yours, but then I realized it was a bantam. Thanks again! - Mary

Jx2inNC, I love your frizzle cochin . . . where did you get him? I am looking for a pullet. Would love to see more pics of the frizzles. Does anyone have red?

. . . AND I JUST LOVE ALL THESE BEAUTIFUL COCHIN PICTURES!

I know there is a slight weight allowance for pullets and ckrls, but is any consideration allowed/given for their young age when judging type and color? They are just so slow to mature - no matter how great typed I think my young bantam ckrl may be (to me) at 4 months, there's no way he's going to have the long flowing length in his hackle and saddle, for example. I suppose the best thing to do is tell myself that if I think he's good now, he'll be that much better in a year. I just wish we had a greater frequency of shows here in Colorado.
