Cochin Thread!!!

Lol, sounds like my large fowl chickens. The two juvies recently got removed from the favorite spot aparently since mommy no longer cares for them they are outcasts. I just can't wait to see what happens when they reach full potential they are jersey giants and the others are normal size I hope they remember all the torture they are receiving. They're only 11-12 wks and almost as big as everyone else.

I was hoping no one would say that about the floor roosting. I wonder if they would be ok if I left them out. I am afraid of the geese hurting them.

I do believe that some varieties are more prone to roosting. Only 50% of my blacks perch. They have plenty of perch space. My others all perch. I see it in the chicks as well.

uh oh! i'm going to be the one on the high roost when my dh finds out the eggs i thought would be duds are hatching! checked on my 1/2 cochin 1/2 silkie moma who went broody on me almost a month ago on eggs that had been sitting in the nesting box for a month before that! she just hatched out a cochin chickie over night! i'll have to get pics tomorrow. i want her to settle down before i disturb her again playing with the new fuzzy butt! it is a strange color combo so i could really use some opinions as to what color(s) it may feather out with!

eta: ok, so i just couldn't resist getting the first baby pic of it! i've already given it a name too! doh!

hubby will not like me when he finds out i'm hatching more!

Now, my Columbians, they throw a fit if they don't have a roost, and they squabble amongst themselves for the "good spots". Apparently, there's a specific order they have to be on the roost in - Henry can't roost next to Darcy, and Bridgette absolutely MUST roost next to April.

I think I've settled on Columbian, Mottled, and White for now though. Actually, those Mottled eggs in the 'bator will mostly be solid Blues and Blacks split to Mottled...but I have a really nice little Blue cockerel who's out of a very nicely Mottled hen, so if I'm hoping for some girls out of these eggs to match up with him. Then, they should produce lots of very nicely Mottled chicks. I just love the whole process of breeding them and raising them, so I don't mind it taking a generation or two. I sort of suspect that you get better, cleaner Mottling when you breed from splits anyways.

Here's that little Blue guy, "Kirby" - he's such a sweetie. Loves to perch on people's arms!

OOOOOOOO! He is very sweet.
I have Partridge and Milli Fleur. I want Blue and Mottled. Mottled actually are good to breed with Milli's to help with form.

how are standard cochins when it comes to laying and setting? What size egg do they lay?
