Oh, she's a real looker!! One of my girls layed her first pullet egg Thursday - at 4-1/2 months! Nothing since - not sure how long before she'll get going for real. But her first was small, round, and just perfect!

Here is my frizzle cochin hen

That seems a bit young to go broody, but not surprising. They are pretty stubborn setters. It's not really the best time of year for hatching so unless you want winter chicks, I'd pull her down. The shorter days and cooler temps should get her to quit but...

No plans that I am aware of. We see very few Splash Cochins in the show hall, so I doubt there will be a qualifying meet for them any time soon.

I guess that kind of surprises me - that you don't at least see more of them at the shows, as Splash just come naturally as part of breeding Blues.

If you think the 'chickencolours' link is awesome, you'll love her book: "Genetics of Chicken Colours". It's a must read for anyone interested in plumage genetics.

There aren't many Blues in the show hall either. Tough color to get right. Type on the Blues is good, but almost impossible to get good lacing on a Blue Cochin. So the end result is that there aren't that many Blue Cochin breeders out there. If there were more there would be more splash and maybe a qualifying meet.

How old is your Partridge pullet? I have two that are 5 mo. old, both getting really wide across the back and nice heads but so far not much penciling at all.

She's 6 1/2 months old give or take a week.

Thanks.

lacing on the blue? i guess i need a better example than what Feathersite has. i have a sweet little lady in my coop that has some lacing around her neck and she is blue but i thought that was considered a blue birchen! i can get a pic later to show you what i'm talking about.

The 'Andalusion' or 'BBS' Blues should have a fine thin outline of black lacing around the edges of the feathers. This does NOT apply to the Self-Blues (also know as Lavender), as they are based on a different gene.
This is my Blue hen, BellaBlue. She is a 2-year old bantam. Not the best example, but hopefully you can see the edging (at least on some of the feathers!). Hard to see when they're out in bright sun:
