Hmm I don't know. I'm trying to get a close up of the nasal cavity. I don't have any Polish to go by.
This "crest" thing is strange as well as this "crown of 6 points". I have to grow these things out to see what they look like as they grow.

Here's the white one.

so cute! We have a husky mix that has the same look in his eyes when he is looking at the chicks. He has been very gentile with them so far but I still don't quite trust him around them. Once the runt got spooked and flew right thru the cage bars. Louie, the dog, grabbed it in his mouth but immediately let go when I shouted his name. The bird immediately flew right bak in thru the bars and scooted right into the coop.

Correct: Splash is not a recognized variety in either Large or Bantam Cochins
Correct: It is a recognized color pattern, just not for this breed.

Incorrect: you can not show them

When/if you enter them in a show, you would enter them as Splash Cochins. The show secretary will fill out their coop tags with the appropriate info. In your case they are large fowl and will be in the Asiatic class, cooped with the other Cochins, normally alphabetically by variety. So you'd have say all the Blacks, C, H, K, P, then all the Buffs, C,H, K, P, and so on through Splash and White etc. Since they are not recognized, they best they can do is Best of Variety and Reserve of Variety. They can not compete for Best of Breed or Reserve of Breed. As far as points go, in the APA, only Class Champions receive points, so given that they can't compete for Best of Breed they will not win the Asiatic Class. However, most breed clubs have their own points systems as well. Cochins International does. You could earn points toward Master Breeders within the club. The way it works for CI is that for every 5 birds entered, the BV and RV receive a single Master Breeder point. So, if there were 10 Splash Cochins entered and you nad both BV and RV, you'd receive 4 points. Master Breeder is achieved (in Cochins International) by earning 500 points in not less than 5 years. Essentially this means that over the course of time you've beaten no less than 2500 other Cochins on your way to achieving MAster Breeder Status. There is more to the CI MB points system, but you get the idea. What you will find is that there are very few folks that show Splash Cochins, either large or bantam. They are a product of breeding Blues, which is a recognized color. If you breed your Blacks and Splash together you'll get 100% Blue chicks. Not sure if this was your plan, but included FYI.

I "green" when it comes to chickens so while you may be able to exhibit non-accepted varieties at sanctioned shows, at least in goats, 4-H shows often do not follow the same rules. In other words, since the show is sanctioned by any governing body, they can do whatever they want so if your individual county fair doesn't allow non-recognized varieties, you may not be able to show them at the fair. Some 4-H goat shows don't even offer classes for all of the recognized breeds. Often times, those that coordinate the 4-H shows have no experience in the "real" show world so they tend to do things like they've been done at that fair for 800 years. Depending on the leadership, you can often show them the rules from a sanctioning organization and convince them to make some changes. It's always amazed me how difficult the adults can often make it for the kids that just want to have fun. I think all too often, the focus of 4-H gets lost on the "power" the adults get by being in charge.

Thank you for all of the help Coopa Cabana, Oberhasli01, and cochinman2005! I got really frustrated when I found out that I apparently couldn't show them at the fair. I felt like no one supported me, but now I know I am supported. I am building a chicken coop right now so I will be able to keep birds over through the winter and breed! I'm extremely excited! Now that I know I can breed my splash I am a little more heartened. =] So thank you soo much for all your help!

Also, does anyone near Delavan, Wisconsin have any young Bantam Cochins for sale? They would need to be born after January 1st. I'd like them to be within a 1 and a half drive. These would be for my 4-H project and I would keep them for breeding so I would really like a nice show pair.

My second favorite, I'm not sure on the color some said black, some said mottled. Opinions are welcomed. She's a pullet.

My little black cockerel, I heard this horrible noise this morning, surely enough it was him trying to crow.

Cute babies Jacklynn! Thanks for sharing. I tried to take video of my four week olds yesterday and even on "sport" mode it was difficult because they run everywhere they go. So I put down bread crumbs thinking they would stand and eat them. Noooo, they each grabbed a crumb and ran to opposite corners to eat it. Silly birds.

CUTE! you've got some nice foot feathers on them.
I went out this morning to give my 4 pens some warm oatmeal and scratch and to break the ice in their waters. (It is a record low 4 degrees here east of Oklahoma City with 10+ inches of snow.) I heard peeping coming from the Mille Fleur coop! Two of my pullets have been sitting on their first clutches. There were 5 chicks. One was dead but still a little warm. I made a snap decision and rushed the other 4 into the brooder in the garage. One died shortly later but the other three seem o.k. The two pullets/hens went back to their brooding. I'll check again in a couple of hours. I wanted them to raise the chicks themselves but is is definately too cold right now. The water in their coop was completely frozen and I have an 85 watt red bulb in their.
Did I make a mistake? I am just a pullet when it comes to raising chickens. By the way, when does a pullet become a hen? My girls are 8 mo. old.
