POTENTIALLY BROODY COCHIN QUESTION:

We have a 22 week old white cochin pullet who has recently been "sitting around a lot." She has not laid eggs yet, but made a makeshift nest in the gravel a few feet from the coop and has been hanging out there a few hours a day.

Is there so-called "pre-broodiness" that can take place before a cochin has even laid one egg?

Am I mistaking "chillaxing" for broody tendencies?

Thanks!!

ARE YOUR COCHINS NOISY???

Just thought I would ask, lol. My Cochin Boys are very noisy in the crowing department.

That must have something to do with fertility(in my mind) because boy are all the cochin groups very fertile which is great.

My fiance insists that we have to get rid of the cochins but I have what I feel are really nice type bantam cochins and I really don't want to part with them all...

The last 2 cocks that were hatched are now about 4 months old and are darn mean!! That was a total shock because all the others are VERY nice boys??

I love that you brood in a kiddie pool - we did exactly the same thing (probably in the same pool!)

I've played around with it a lot. First tried cage wire around it, but that was too stiff so went to hardware cloth. The top is a ring of pex tubing with chicken wire stretched over it.

And if the weather ever straightens up, I make a circle of cage wire in the yard with the pool (weighted down) on top.

I love kiddie pools!

Any time you're ready. I've been hatching about once a week, so have different ages. The frizzles are from the blue frizzle roo and blue hen that I had at Connersville along with the blue hen I got from you. The other pair is a frizzled splash roo with the splash hen that I got from you. They've all been productive.

Given that she's yet to lay an egg and she's a pullet, I would be willing to bet you'll see her lay an egg any day. And she'll most likely lay it right where she's been prepping. Check her vent. If it's soft and pliable and you can fit a couple fingers between her pubic bones, she's getting ready to lay. She's just practicing the routine.

Great - thanks for the advice, Cochin Man!

This in my one and only cochin... it's 5 weeks old as of yesterday. It doesn't have any pink on the comb, but the wattles are pink now. Since all of you are cochin owners, I was hoping you might be able to tell me if I have a pullet or a roo here.

Thank you!
