Cochin Thread!!!

I have been working on the Large Mottled Cochins for three years now starting with a black cockerel that was split to mottled. From that I bred him back to his daughters of which there were two different matings and most of the chicks came out mottled in the F2s. This year I am breeding 5 different bloodlines by crossing to other black cochin lines and line breeding the original three lines I produced. So far I have 14 cockerels and 10 pullets that are about 3 months old and a bunch of new chicks hatching each week. The hens are laying well now and they are very fertile so far with excellent hatchability.
The chicks are easy to tell if they express the mottling gene as they will have mottled skin on the shanks and toes and as they begin to feather they will have quite a bit of white tipped feathers, more so than pure blacks.
There are several of us on the forum working on large mottleds; Jamie Matts, Tom Roebuck are two that I am sure of and there may be others. Not sure if they are raising them in saleable numbers but we are working towards a qualifying meet in a couple of years.
They are a beautiful bird and if I can figure out how to do it, I will post some pictures when they get closer to maturity. So far, I am very pleased with the results and have several promising birds to take to Indianapolis in October.

Craig - looks like you're going to have a very good showing this weekend!!! Be sure and keep us posted! And I can't wait to see that cockerel in another year!

I ended up taking a different Cockeral because of feather damage/missing primary. My 6 Columbians were the only ones there. Judges liked my hen and pullet best. I had lots of positive comments on the
Columbians. Best Cochin/ Champion Fetherleg was a Black Cock brought up by the Howes family of Hurley Mississippi(over a 12 hr drive). Reserve Cochion/Reserve Fetherleg was a white cock from Shawnee Feather Barn of Anna Il.. Best Cochin row I have seen since last Crossroads show. This was a relatively small show 750-800 birds but a higher percentage of very good birds than any show I have attended in years. Pam Hamilton of Troy Missouri brought some very good whites and blacks. Brad Jones of Cape Girardeau Mo. brought some very good Blacks. I'm sorry but I forgot the name of the lady who brought that nice Barred Cochin cock. Exhibitors from 8 states.

Thanx again to all the breeders participating in the 2011 Cochin Breeder's Directory (see link below in my sig line). The list continues to grow every day! I hope you all get some good traffic/inquiries/sales from other BYC members visiting the thread. Or maybe you've found another breeder with that one special Variety that you've been looking for! While Bantams continue to be most popular, we have EXCELLENT representation in Large Fowl - which I think is just fantastic!

And it is officially an INTERNATIONAL Breeder's Directory, as there is representation on the list from both Canada and the U.K.!

We do have two glaring holes to still fill on the list, so if you are a breeder of either of the following, we'd love to hear from you:

1) Bantam - Silver Pencilled

2) Bantam - Black Tailed Red (Yes! This is a recognized Bantam Cochin Variety!)
