Cochin Thread!!!

I have no idea if he's the right color or not, but I like the color. Are you one of the ones working on a blue laced red? I think he might be a very good candidate if you're up for another project.

Hi Robert, Yes, Midas did double-duty last year - as sire of my Golden Laced, and also as sire of my F1 Blue Laced Reds. I crossed him on my Splash hen. All the offspring were dark blue, as predicted. I held back 3 of the pullets; they will all go back with Midas when I will start hatching my F2's in a month or so.

With the F1's, because I was basically crossing Black x Splash, I got all Blues. With the F2's, they will be Black x Blue, so I expect 50% Black and 50% Blue. I'm just anxious to see how much, if any, gold/red and lacing I get this time around. Just wish I wasn't so far behind the 8-ball with my hatching this year.

This is the Splash hen I had him on: Sadly, I lost her last fall.

This is what the offspring looked like as chicks:

And this is one of the pullets I kept (and will use this year) at about 4 months:

That splash is a pretty girl. Good luck with your hatching. Do you expect about 25% with lacing? or will you get more like 50% with lacing, but just not clean lacing? I really like the look of the Gold laced and the silver laced. I CAN'T start anything new now, but I'm excited to see what everyone else is doing. I think you've got a good start.

Maybe a notch too red as far as ground color, but something to also keep an eye on is pattern in the hackle and saddle. Your male has red hackles up top and then it transitions to black hackles and cape without any striping or gold centers. I believe that the hackle and saddle pattern are directly related to how crisply marked the overall bird is so without well marked hackle and saddle we'll always be fighting mossiness and sketchy lacing. I know this is a Cochin thread but I found a couple good Wyandotte pics that provide what I feel are good examples of ground color and lacing. This pullet shows exceptional hackle markings.

Well after almost 5 years of not having any birds, I finally have a pair of Cochin Bantams again.

Got a pair of White Frizzle Cochins in the mail this morning and thought I would share a few pics with you guys. These were taken pretty quickly, and not the best pics, but I will have better pics later after I can get these guys bathed. Granted, they need a bath and they are still young and have alot of filling out to do yet, but they are still nice birds to start with. Hope you guys enjoy.

My chicks are 2 weeks old today! Yay!! So while cleaning the brooder, I grabbed my camera. My biggest one is a splash- and it needs a bath, but I think I'm going to call it 'Eagle eye" LOL
