Cochin Thread!!!

I think a Bantam Cochin is an excellent choice for a young girl of Emily's age! How is your Great Dane doing around the birds? I love big dogs! The bigger, the better!!

My Cochins are great with kids. In fact it is my Cochins I take out when kids are over, or during events (I did Civil War Girl Scout camp, and lead the chicken station. I brought a Cochin hen and she loved having 30+ little girls fawn all over her.) Naturally, you will have to teach your daughter to handle her bird nicely. As long as she does she should have a very sweet pet.

RR - could you elaborate for just a moment about what the Chicken Station was at the Civil War Girl Scout camp? I don't want to get off-thread, but seeing as how you brought a Cochin . . .

Thanks Everyone! Just wanted to hear real people agree that is a good choice too!
BTW, Milly was great with the baby chicks. Our neighbors down the way a bit, have full grown chickens, roosters and a Turkey...They come over to eat our bugs sometimes and Milly got a kick out of watching them. I had a bunch of salami and cheese when I introduced her the babies. She will just have to learn they are our pets and not for consumption. Of course she wonlt be allowed in their coop or runs. Thanks Again!

Did you notice how both of them had different markings? I thought that was weird!

Not so much. You should see how some of the Mille's look when they hatch. I've had a couple totally yellow and some very chipmunky... We'll see how these guys feather out soon enough. Keep thinking PAIR!

I have a 6 year old daughter and a 3 year old daughter. The bantam cochins are great with children -- even the roosters. My roosters don't like being held if they can help it (usually calm right down once caught) but I've never seen them act aggressively toward my girls. I have several little hens that love to be held. The bantams are a good size for my girls. (I always supervise them while they are out with the chickens.)
I also have a trio of Wyandottes. That roo is prone to pecking at people's feet -- mine included. I don't think he would actually do them any real harm, but i still don't trust him with my girls, so they don't get out and play with the big chickens.
I have a pair of standard cochins and that roo is huge!!!! But I've never seen him make any aggressive move to anyone or anything, but did I mention that he is huge! (and not even a year old yet). Way too big to be held by little girls.
I think bantam is the way to go. There's just the right size for little laps.

Now waiting on the Buff Barred eggs to hatch, and hoping the chicks are buff barred (instead of just Buff).
