Cochin Thread!!!

This may be a dumb question, but my silkies are too stupid to take care of themselves, are Cochin smarter?

Like if a rock has the intelligence of 0, a silkie 1, Koko the signing chimp/ sparky the typing dolphin 100 - where do Cochin fit in? (0-100)

Based on the amount of feathering at five weeks I would say they are both pullets, males don't feather quite as quickly. Blues should be distinctly different from your black birds with a leaden gray feather even as chicks. If you don't have any blues just wait and breed that splash pullet to a black male and you'll have all the blue chicks you want. Black X Splash = 100% blue offspring.

Bo lots of great info. My Cochins BBS are 10O percent Rau i have had that happen, only a couple of times. Spoke with Karl he had the same thing to say as you!

I started with all Silkies 8 years ago, and after working my way thru Silkies, Polish, Ameraucanas, Faverolles and D'uccles, I now have only Bantam Cochins. It's not necessarily that Cochins are smarter than Silkies - it's just that Cochins literally ooze personality and cuteness. They (Cochins) just can't seem to do enough to please you. They are always happy! I think they have roly-poly personalities to go along with their roly-poly bodies.

But are they smart enough to not chill (I'm in FL- its spring- its really hard to get chilled!) or drown - much easier to do in FL- ?

Cochins have diffrent feathers + down and can groom their feathers to be water proof not like a duck but more like a regular chicken, that is a advantage that silkies don't have. I think they are much more inteligent they can live free if they have to. comming in for feed and water, especialy when they have chicks, at least that was my experience growing up with them in the Rouge Valley OR. a much harsher climate than FL. think Northern CA.

I have several very pretty Splash Cochin bantam pullets (and cockerals) for sale, 7-8 weeks old, to be shipped on Tuesday. Anyone interested? They are out of my best pair that I got from TheCochin Coop.

I would give silkies about a 10, just enough to eat and do life things but no personality. I had a few and they were like little blobs with absolutely no personality and they cant even see because of their crests. I would give cochins about a 50 - 60. They're smart enough to live outside and get away from predators and have tons of personality. they know the difference between people and will alarm at strangers

Mine have dirty crest and no beards so I know they see...

Thanks for the help, 5x smarter is great- they would do well here.
