Cochin Thread!!!

Any advice about 5 wk old cochin bantam chicks that dig the shaving so industrusly that they bury their start&grow every few hrs,

I have tried changing from round feeder to trough feeder, raising feeder on cement blocks, the 2 red chicks just fling the shaving like they are going to dig their way out of prison. I think if I go the milk bottle route they will just climb inside and fling it out.
Any ideas.

ETA: I have yet to find a feeder that chicks can't scratch their food out of.

What are the personalities of Favarolles like? I think they are beautiful - feathered legs, beard, and single comb. I still can't imagine liking any breed better than my cochins though.

I have 4 broody hens right now and have been checking every day for chicks. My girls scold me but never peck me. Guess they are used to my impatience. Yesterday I finally found 1 self-blue/black chick under my black hen. Today when I lifted her up there were 4!, an explosion of chicks, too cute. have I mentioned how much I love Cochins? lol

Actually, the Faverolles were great! I got my 2 hens from Rose Isgrigg, and got the roo here locally. Very, very mellow! I thought the hens were just beautiful - with the beards and muffs, they reminded me of pictures of Elizabethan Queens! The roo was super sweet - loved to cuddle - until one day, for some reason, he thought my nose looked good enough to eat and took a bite - we didn't get along too well after that! For bantams, they layed eggs slightly larger than the other breeds, but I suppose that's because they are a meatier/heavier bird.

Funny you mention the two breeds...I think I'm somehow slowly converting to cochins and faverolles.

I'm wondering what different egg colors everyone is getting from their Bantam Cochins - and if you've noticed any tendency of differing shades coming from different color varieties? I'm getting such a mix (below) - is this typical of what everyone is seeing? I haven't really studied egg color very much - does the gene for darker eggs come from the male or female?
