Cochin Thread!!!

I am just a novice but I think it is too early to tell. Mine sure change alot, in color and combs. I may be imagining it but I think combs grow at different rates on individual birds.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

The feed store advertised them as Giant Cochins. So I would take that as large fowl I gather?

I feel kind of silly contacting Mr. Roebuck just to ask a question like this, but then again I'm getting nervous as to what I'll do if the cutie pie ends up crowing one morning and I don't have a plan in place for a new home. Hmmm....

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm not expert, and I've never had a partridge cochin, but I do have some partridge wyandottes. Judging strickly from the feather coloring my guess is that you have a pullet.

Someone correct me if they think this is not right.

OK, I'm very interested...........how can you tell at this point based on feather color? My bantams look alike at this age. I've got a little roo that looks just like his sisters only he's sprouting a comb. What do I look for?

I thought the partridge boys would begin to develop a black breast and the partridge pattern would only be on the young pullets. I have mille crosses that come from a partridge background and the male juvies do not have a civilized partridge pattern like the pullet's.. but, more an erratic smudgy look with a dark breast.

This is all so helpful! I was wondering about this just this morning. I have my first partridge that hatched from a variety pack of bantam cochin eggs. She? is feathering out with a distinct partridge pattern (only about 2 weeks old) and I was wondering if the feathers would be different. I really can't keep another roo, but a pullet is a different story all together. We'll keep an check on it and see how it develops.

Thanks for all the great tips and ideas.

Robert

At this point, it appears to be a pullet. Regarding the other posts relating to the chick coloring on Partridge Cochins or Partridge in general, I'll try to take a few photos this weekend for comarison purposes, both large and bantam. Some Partridge cockerels tend to feather in like pullets more so than others. To a certain degree all PArtride males' initial feathering looks like the pullets, but they start to show black in the breast, and different wing pattern at a certain point.

Hopefully I didn't "yay!" too soon. Comparison pictures would be great.

This is the best forum I've ever been on. Everyone is so friendly and helpful!
