Cochin Thread!!!

I just love my cochins! I just bought three frizzle cochin bantams while I was at the fair with my Daughter and her Reserve Grand Champion barred cochin bantam! I got two red and one black which they told me was a girl, but after I got them home it started crowing at me!

The red ones are girls though!

I am trying to name them and I am stumped for names!

I am putting pictures of them on here and would love to get some names back from you all!

With the heat out there all over the country I would not expect a good hatch from any shipped eggs at this time. It gets hot enough in trucks to damage eggs. I would think your best bet to get a good hatch is to find some within driving distance until it cools down some. Good Luck!

I shipped some out 3 weeks ago and it has been hot here in AR go an email from the woman I sent them and she got 20 out of 24 eggs to hatch. I bought eggs from brahma bantam eggs from Aarron Hunsinger and had 8 out of 12 hatch this week also. As soon as I got them I put them right in the incubator and let them set in the turner for 12 hours before turning it on and think that helped. I pack with a lot of paper and think that helps insulate them also. Expecting another batch from Aarron so we'll see how it goes this go around. I have been keeping vitamins and electrolytes in their water and think that helps my birds and keep the eggs strong thru shipping. Also I make sure I ship eggs no older than 4 days old, the fresher even the better helps keep the air cell in place.

luckypickens, are you shipping out any hatching eggs? I'm in MS so it probably wouldn't take very long for them to get here.

Well my hopes of a breeding project just went *flush* down the toilet. Petra, my blue cochin hen, is VERY aggressive with Duchess, my cream colored hen, so I can't put them in the breeding pen together. Charlie, the buff roo, is a little larger than Duchess, and he has evidently injured her while mating as well...she can't walk "right" at the moment. She is still laying though, so I can maybe get a couple of little ones from her...but now she is segregated by herself...and Petra started picking on EVERYONE else so she had to go to another segregation area too...sheesh. I guess whatever eggs the girls lay in the next few days plus what was layed before all HELLO broke loose will be the only option I have unless I want to start from scratch with all new adults...
