Cochin Thread!!!

There has been and I'm sure will be again, discussion about the Reds and who's breeding them. You could check the breeders directory (there's a link for it in Coopa Cabana's signature) or do a BYC search for Red Cochins and it should turn up all or most of the discussions about them on here.

I took some new pictures of our new partridge pair of bantams. I hope they give you a better view of them. They are still so young! In the new pic of the female you can see her face and hackle feathers coming in. The young roo still has saddle feathers coming in, and he isn't crowing yet so at most 5 months old. I am guessing the pullet to be approximately 14 weeks old, she seems to be about the same as my other pullet at that age.

I like this shot of the two together, It shows their little bustles so well. I am feeling that they look pretty good for how young they are. I think as they mature a bit more and finish getting their feathers in they should look pretty good.

I don't know what constitutes good coloring on a male partridge, so please tell me what you all think of him.

This pic of the pullet shows that as her adult feathers are coming in they are showing signs of better penciling, so I am excited to see how she will mature over the next couple of months.

Thanks everyone.

How sweet of you to name a Mottled after me! And it isn't even MY Mottled!

Matt A NC named one after me, intentionally. He has gotten a few Cochins from me and one got dubbed with my name. Too funny. He now has some blue Mottleds from me. I can't wait to see how his grow up.

I kept this lady for myself.

Yeah, how cool would it be if you had a husband named Jeffrey?

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my babies from you stephanie! I'm so excited!

My neighbors needing another cochin rooster as her mille fleur is so old she thinks he's gone sterile so I may be giving her the roo from the trio. She LOVES her cochins to death! They get all kinds of treats and they sometimes sneak into the house. lol. She'll give him a great home and that way my roo to hen ratio is a little more even.

I'm so excited!

I'm sure it's possible eventually, but I think there still a good ways off from just getting a good self-blue cochin, then it might be worth investing in the time to develop a mottled version. Personally, I'm not sure if the mottling will show up well on a self-blue?? (But i think the blue mottleds are really pretty, so maybe so).

Yes, it was just a random thought I had at work.

I have a bantam self-blue/lavender hen (though her type isn't very good), and I really like the color.

I have a newbie cochin question: I'd love to get a few cochins to hatch some eggs for me next year and have a great life as a broody, but how young do cochins tend to show broodiness? Someone local offered me some chicks that are 6 weeks, but I was hoping to start hatching eggs under the girls in April/May.. that seems kinda soon to me for a late summer chick. Someone else has a lovely partridge trio for sale that are just over a year old, makes me want to just keep the girls for broodies, but then I know I'd get the itch to hatch some babies from them!

Should I look for a cochin that's 1+ years old?
