Cochin Thread!!!

DFcottage, mine started sitting right around the time they were 1. It was their first Spring, anyway. But you can't count on every Cochin to go broody. I believe I have two or three out of my 6 or 7 that ever did, so maybe half. Now the ones that did were wonderful mothers and I am guessing that the others may have been broody later on in their second year if they had lived. (we had dog problems.)

What I am saying is you should not plan on getting 1 or 2 hens and count on them being broody. Once you get one that is, she will probably be broody every year though. As far as summer chicks going broody in their first Spring, I have no idea, I haven't done that. I assume that once they are old enough to lay they will also be old enough to set, if they are so inclined.

Not all of mine go broody either, but I swear if more than 4 eggs are left in any nest box at any given time- watch out!
I still have 2 setting. They have to be the most people-tolerant broodies though- letting you check the eggs and count chicks and even handle them without trying to bite your hand off.

I have a broody LF Cochin pullet that hatched 3/16 from a hatchery. That would make her roughly 6 months old. She sat for a week before I gave her a dozen eggs Monday(all EE/OE). She broke one of the eggs, but it had a thin shell(my leghorn lays huge eggs!).
Need to get a picture of her on her nest.

How sweet of you to name a Mottled after me! And it isn't even MY Mottled!

Matt A NC named one after me, intentionally. He has gotten a few Cochins from me and one got dubbed with my name. Too funny. He now has some blue Mottleds from me. I can't wait to see how his grow up.

I kept this lady for myself.

Yeah, how cool would it be if you had a husband named Jeffrey?

I have a good friend named Jeffrey but not my hubby's name. Still pretty funny though.

My bantam cochin girls have moved out (they where in my room for quarantine) and our now in the coop with their boy Kernel (a standard WL/EE cross, who is mostly blind because of a raccoon attack) and everyone is getting along well. But the girls can walk on Kernel's chest with clearance
