Cochin Thread!!!

Yes, it's a cockerel and looks to be a Cochin or Cochin cross.

I don't want to ruffle any feathers, but I'd say if a Cochin was involved in the production of this lovely bird, it had a condom on. I would agree with the assessment that it is a Marans, but possibly just a Blue since there's no black pattern. I'm not up on the color patterns of the Marans, but I think they have the Blue and Blue Copper.

LOL I was thinking the same thing. Not much Cochin in this bird. Sorry.

When I went down today to feed the birds and mess around I found a nice little suprise. One of my birds has started laying. I have lights on to induce it, so I am glad they are starting now. Just waiting on my White Frizzles to start and then I will break out the incubator. :p

My Columbian hens are starting to lay and 1 pullet. Early for me to hatch and yet I hate to waste an egg. Don't know what I will do. We still have over 10 weeks of bad weather ahead. Not great time to have chicks.

Craig, I empathize with you about not wanting to waste an egg, but the timing is terrible. I have chicks in the house right now and half of them are ready to go out if I can make sure they have enough heat when I turns really cold........which it will be doing very soon. I'm going today to pick up a Sportsman 1502 that I found on Craig's List and wasn't planning on doing anything with it until spring. However, the Buff Columbians started to lay. Oh me, what shall I do? Talk about not wanting to waste an egg, but if I hatch these (assuming they are fertile) I'll have chickens in house most likely all winter. ARGH!!!

I hate having chicks in the house all winter, also. I did it last year, I had chicks in the house from the first of Feb until I quit hatching in June.

I thought I would never get the chicken smell out of my house. The dust was terrible.

But here I am with four little eggs in the incubator due to hatch Christmas day.

Yep, these tweets will surely be in the house all winter.

It wasn't planned, but the stinkin' dog killed my daughters favorite pullet, so we are hatching out her last few eggs. At least it is only 4 chicks, and three are bantams. I swear the bigger chicks get stinky so fast!! I don't plan to hatch again until spring swaps start around here in late Feb or early March. I am also trying some hopefully cleaner types of bedding.
