Cochin Thread!!!

Is anybody else working on Mottled buff ? I think Amy had some at one time. Here is one of mine but she is broody and very grouchy. Its hard to get the mottling to show up in a picture but hers is pretty good.

I actually breed these birds from scratch and they are Dun. The difference being they do not breed true. If you breed Chocolate/Dun to Chocolate/Dun you get Black, Kahki and Chocolate colored birds. If you breed the Kahki to Black you get all Chocolate colored birds. Kahki delutes the Black. With Self Chocolate there is no delution. You breed Chocolate to Chocolate you get all Chocolate or Chocolate to Black you get Chocolate and Black. No Kahki is involved. Chocolate is sex-linked reccesive and as you say dun is recessive. Dun works like blue. I think this is right. If anybody knows more please chime in.

That's the way I understand it as well - Dun acts like (Andalusian) blue. With the Khaki being the "Dun Splash" so to speak.

Keep up the good work!

Sad day on the farm. Lost our barred bantam rooster yesterday. So I need some suggestions here on whatnot do now. I had him in with a barred hen and a blue hen. (Thank goodness I have eggs from him in the incubator right now) anyway, want to know what y'all think I should do with the hens. I have a buff and a MF rooster. Right now I have 2 MF hens with that roo and a buff and a black hen with the buff. Going to put the other two girls with these roosters but was wondering how I should place them. Please advise....

Sorry about your loss.

It depends on what you want to get. I don't think any of your combinations would give you an identifiable variety. I like the Buff x best for potential pretty birds.

Personally I would be looking for a Black , Blue or Barred Cock bird for use now or trying to" wait patiently" to identify which of your eggs/young birds to keep for future use.

I don't know if you received any advice about separating birds, but when a hen is broody and you want her to set, she needs to be isolated from the flock. It drives the broody crazy trying to "protect" her eggs and as you know the rest of the flock is seriously inconvenienced. If she's still broody and you really want her to set, I would let her so ahead. There is nothing to be gained by making her stay alone without eggs. If anything, you'll just have trouble trying to reintroduce her to the flock. When I use a broody to hatch, I set them up in the run with the rest of her gang and put her in a dog crate and CLOSE it. That way she remains part of the group, but is protected from them trying to come in and lay in her nest or bug her in any way. I also take the chicks when they hatch so I don't end up with wild chicks. Also if you've got eggs that are hatching a different times, she won't ignore the first chicks to stay on the nest. Hens will care for eggs first and chicks last.

Thanks everyone for all your advice on my first broody! She only has 2 fertile eggs under her the other one was hers and infertile :( We will see what happens! I really hope they hatch, she is such a sweetheart and would be a great momma! Both of my Cochins have gone broody but only the one hen Which has been on her eggs for a week is going stung. the other one i had to pull out of the pen as well because she wasn't letting anybody into any of the nesting boxes to lay and was standing guard, my other girls stopped laying and some of them would drop them outside so they wouldn't have to muscle with her i have plenty of nesting boxes for them too. I watched her do it Every time one of them would go to lay she would continuously peck them until they gave up or just flat chase them out of the coop. everybody is much happier now that she is not in the flock even the little Roo, I wasn't to give her some eggs to see if she will settle down, but i have a feeling she just needs time away from the flock and the flock from her.
