Cochin Thread!!!

The one in the crate (Gizmo) - as much as I adore him (and he's terrific with humans of all ages and other dogs) - is absolutely NOT trustworthy with small animals. He has been the end of many an escaped hamster, for instance. So I do NOT allow him out of his crate when the chickens are out.

It was a real shocker, then, when my newest rescue, Buddy, ended up being such an angel with the chickens. He will lay out there in the yard all day with the little silkies, and now the HUGE cochins, walking all around him, and barely flick an ear.

Counting my blessings, but as the Arabs say . . . "Trust in God, but TIE YOUR CAMEL."

lol, ;nuff said!

They are adorable!

I can't get my dogs to not want to eat my chickens. =(

an rp is a roleplay and its about chickens in the forest cause their parents escaped from a hatchery and so its about their kids and they have to survive you can read it and decide if you want to join if you want

I'm doing lousy, lousy, lousy so far this year:

5/15 - set 14 eggs; 4 fertile; 3 to hatcher; 1 hatched; "Little One" died on day 7
5/20 - set 11 eggs; none fertile
5/25 - set 9 eggs; dropped one candling; other 8 not fertile
5/30 - set 6 eggs; none fertile
6/05 - set 5 eggs; none fertile
6/10 - set 5 eggs; 2 are fertile!!
6/15 - set 6 eggs; 2 are fertile!!
6/20 - set 4 eggs

I have 7 hens, but I'm only breeding 5 of them. It's going to be a long, hot summer . . . So I'm just going to sit back and enjoy everyone else's until things pick up here.

That sounds just like the hatching season I was having up until about a month ago! Zero fertility. Then I got my act together, bushwhacked everyone's butts, and I'm having fantastic hatches!

This batch came out of the incubator this morning - 11 eggs went into the 'bator, 100% fertility, and 10 of the 11 hatched. These are about half out of my regular Columbian pen, and half out of my Blue-Patterned Silver Columbian project pair, which have been throwing B/B/S patterned chicks and a few solid blues:

I have a pen of older babies in that ugly phase right now... can you spot the youngster that doesn't belong???
