Cochin Thread!!!

It has been a while since we have talked about recognized varieties. Thought I would bring back something I posted last year. The last part is what Gail added to complete the list of recognized varieties. More than a few are quite scarce. The first group of Bantams are recognized by both APA and ABA. The last group only ABA.

This is the list of APA recognized colors as of July 2010.
Hope this helps someone.

Listed by Breed, variety, year recognized, class

Bantams

Cochin Birchen 1977 Feather Legged
Cochin Black 1874 Feather Legged
Cochin Blue 1977 Feather Legged
Cochin Brown Red 1977 Feather Legged
Cochin Buff 1874 Feather Legged
Cochin Columbian 1977 Feather Legged
Cochin Golden Laced 1965 Feather Legged
Cochin Mottled 1965 Feather Legged
Cochin Partridge 1874 Feather Legged
Cochin Red 1977 Feather Legged
Cochin Silver Laced 1965 Feather Legged
Cochin White 1874 Feather Legged

Large fowl

Cochin Barred 1982 Asiatic
Cochin Black 1874 Asiatic
Cochin Blue 1965 Asiatic
Cochin Brown 1965 Asiatic
Cochin Buff 1874 Asiatic
Cochin Golden Laced 1965 Asiatic
Cochin Partridge 1874 Asiatic
Cochin Silver Laced 1965 Asiatic
Cochin White 1874 Asiatic

For Bantams, the ABA also recognizes:
Barred
Black Tailed Red
Buff Columbian
Lemon Blue
Silver Penciled

This is only my opinion:
In Bantams Black, Blue, Buff, Mottled, and Whites are in good numbers and quality.

I see some good Barred, Birchen, Brown Red, Columbians and Partridge but not many. These are only 1 or 2 breeders from falling into neglect.

I think Gold Laced, Silver Laced, Buff Columbian, Red, Lemon Blue, and Silver Penciled all need considerable work. There are some dedicated people working on most of these but many more are needed.

I know of no one who is working on Black tailed red. I do know someone who got a few while working on her Reds so it is possible that someone could make real progress there if that is their goal.

I know of people working on Self Blue and others working on getting Splash recognized. There are other colors/varieties that are being worked on but have quite a ways to go.

In Large Fowl I have seen all varieties shown in the last year. All could use more breeders.

I know of some working on LF Mottled and Columbian. Wish them nothing but success.

I currently work with Bantam Blacks, Birchen, Buff Columbian, Columbian, Silver Penciled , Partridge, and SL project.

I also have been lurking and reading this thread through. Everyone here contributes in an encouraging and supportive way. I just wanted to say that though I dont contribute to the thread I do read it and really appreciate the way the members treat this as cooperative and supportive community. Other breed threads arent always like this. I find myself saving this thread for my last read, some of the others I just want to get out of the way, but the Cochin thread, lol, leaves me with a great feeling and frame of mind to go on with the rest of the day. I just wanted to say THANKS to the folks here! Each and every one of you is greatly appreciated!

PS. I know there is a list of accepted colors and patterns for bantam cochin, I have seen it a few times on the thread, and I know that there are several folks working on other project colors. I have also noted that there are a few folks who have mentioned that some of the accepted colors/patterns are not being bred much anymore. Does anyone have a list of those varieties that are fading away? Is there a list of them somewhere that I can refer? I would like to contribute to the breed at some point and think I might like to start by supporting some of the older varieties that are loosing popularity and thus breeders. Any info or points of reference would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Cochin thread! Yes - we are a fun goup of folks - I think it has to do with the nature of our roly-poly birds!!! The Cochins International website has a lot of great info for you - see the link in my sig line. The accepted varieties are on the variety menu tab. Probably the most popular (and seen) are the Whites, Blacks, and Buff. All the patterned and parti-colored varieties need more breeders, as do solid colors such as Red.

You know, I can remember when Buff's were not all that common. This was just about 5 years ago. There were only a few reputable breeders with them, raising Buffs that were actually of good type and color, now they are bred by several breeders and have had a great comeback. I am working with Red's, and although I dont have great birds to start with, I have to start somewhere. I now have 4 chicks on the ground and several more eggs set, so we will see what happens. I hope to see Red, as well as many of the other lesser popularized varieties, make a great come back and more people breeding and showing them. I really hope to do my part, with more than just one variety.

On the matter of the most popular varieties, I would have to say that Black, White, Buff, Mottled, and Blue are what you will see in good numbers, and of good quality, in most shows. Numbers are on the rise for some of the varieties that arent as easily found, and that excites me. Hope within a few years that we wil have some great birds displayed, of many varieties.

Hi everyone!
I just hatched out some bantam Cochin last week and I wanted to show them off.
They are a mix of colors and I have no clue how to sex them since they are just over a week old.
These pictures are from Monday.
I'd appreciate any input as far as coloring.
Thank you!

I have thread asking the same question but them I found this thread and thought I would post it here also.

I am planning on starting a Lavender Mottled Cochin project next spring...I have 1 lavender rooster 1 lavender hen and 1 mottled hen...I am planning on breeding the lav roo to the mottled hen not sure what the offspring will be but I am thinking they will either look like their mother (mottled) and be split to lavender or be solid black and be split to lavender..then I would grow them up...keep the best and cull the rest and should I breed those back to the mother (mottled) or father (lavender)? If any one knows how to create a lavender mottled cochin...please let me know...thanks

if you breed a lav roo with a motteled hen you will get ---all black chicks (motteled is resesive and lav is resesive ) all chicks will be split to lav and all chicks will be split to motteled you would need to breed F1s back togather 25% will be lav 75% will be black you will have a 25% chance of them being motteled black or lav this is where it gets trick because the black chicks may or may not carry the lav or motteled geen the lav chicks may or may not carry the motteled geen ex ex ex you would need to keep ONLY LAV MOTTELED F2 to be shure

lave roo over motteled hens ------ F1 all black chick all split for lav all chichs split for motteled

breed F1s togather -------------------F2 will be 25% lav 25% black (split for lav) 50% black
F2 will have a 25% of being motteled (may be back motteled or lav motteled)

if you want to be shure what you will hatch only breed F2 that are lav motteled you will have a 12.5% chance of beeing lav motteled F2s
you may have to hatch a lot of F1 eggs to get what you are looking for i hope this helps and i wish you luck BANJO

If anyone is interested, and can pick up, or something else is worked out, I have several birds for sale, and have many young cockerels free to good home. I am in southern KY, and if it is worth my time, would consider meeting someone up to 1.5 hrs away.

I need more room, so the sooner these guys are gone the better. Still have birds hatching eggs, and some chicks to grow out so I will need room very soon. These are nice birds, and am asking reasonable prices.

Hi Casey. Where in southern Kentucky are you? I am in southern IN. I have an 18 week old white Cochin pullet (bantam) who just started laying and would love a cockerel for her. Smooth or frizzled. I have three younger black (bantams) and one red (bantam) and three silver laced (bantams) too. All are pullets. I also have three standard Cochin pullets (one dark blue, one medium blue and one splash). No Roos though. What do you have that would pair well age/color-wise with my girls? I think frizzled might be a fun addition for us. We have Silkies and Showgirls along with a colorful laying flock too. We like variety. :)

I posted a response to this yesterday. I was surprised and disappointed more people did not comment. I would love to know what others think as I think I take this too seriously sometimes. My response yesterday was based on opinion and have since gathered number that pretty well back up my original post. I used the points list from Cochin International Master Breeders that had been earned before December of last year to gather the information. I will give the variety and the approximate number of people who have earned points. I only did Bantams. LF need more breeders in all varieties.

Black- over 110 people have earned points
White- about 80
Blue- over 60
Buff- about 40
Mottled-35
Splash-20
Black Frizzle-20
White Frizzle-16
Barred-15
Birchen-13
Brown Red-11
Columbian-11
Partridge-11
Blue Frizzle-8
Gold Laced-5
Silver Penciled-5
Red-4
Silver Laced-3
Lemon blue- ZERO
Black tailed Red- ZERO
Buff Columbian- ZERO
