Cochin Thread!!!

Question...I hatchesd out some bbs LG cochins from 4-h show quality but they all have dark shanks. Do I need to sell these and get yellow shank birds. I'm wanting to eventually show them.

Are they really dark or are they a dusky color with yellow showing through on the shanks and top of feet? Yellow on bottom of feet? Need to see pictures or have a better description.

Thanks Craig three-four months eh? I have 2/3 boys and they are getting kinda rough on the girls. I guess I better set up a divider in their pen because I diont think the girls can take it for 2 more months.

I have birds still in various stages of development, but I can now tell that some of them are going to shape up very nicely. The oldest were hatched 3-26(6) and the cockerels still dont have all the cushion in, and the others were hathed 4-7(6) and 4-30(28), and they are still just now filling out decently, and the frizzles I have noticed are really starting to get width to their feathering. I have over 20 smooth cockerels, and plan to keep only 3, and I still want to wait on some of them that have caught my eye recently to fill out more. I dont want to get rid of a bird and find out later it was better than anything I dcided to keep.

I cull males harder and earlier than females because I only keep 1 male for every 3 females.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their kind words on my blues. I am very excited about them. As I said I have several nice babies in the grow out pen and hoping to continue working on them. I just love blue chickens, especially my fluffy butted cochins

Thank you for posting their pics! Seeing birds like yours make me love cochins even more - if that was possible.

I posted a response to this yesterday. I was surprised and disappointed more people did not comment. I would love to know what others think as I think I take this too seriously sometimes. My response yesterday was based on opinion and have since gathered number that pretty well back up my original post. I used the points list from Cochin International Master Breeders that had been earned before December of last year to gather the information. I will give the variety and the approximate number of people who have earned points. I only did Bantams. LF need more breeders in all varieties.

Black- over 110 people have earned points
White- about 80
Blue- over 60
Buff- about 40
Mottled-35
Splash-20
Black Frizzle-20
White Frizzle-16
Barred-15
Birchen-13
Brown Red-11
Columbian-11
Partridge-11
Blue Frizzle-8
Gold Laced-5
Silver Penciled-5
Red-4
Silver Laced-3
Lemon blue- ZERO
Black tailed Red- ZERO
Buff Columbian- ZERO

Your thoughts?
Wow! only 11 Partridge? I would like to work on them in a couple of years or so. I don't have room to work on them now but can't seem to part with the quad I have and they are not SQ. I know they require double breeding and I am only a novice but some day.........
